Spring Fling
by trailhead54 at 5/29/2008 4:16:40 PM

Hi.

NOTE: Since I have blogs at a few different sites, I am now repeating my primary blog to all the sites where I participate. This blog is also on my Yahoo 360, MySpace and personal web page.

For me, the most intense segment of spring is now over. From the vernal equinox until Memorial Day is my favorite time of year, with everything coming to life. Despite very large wet vernal pools from exceptional winter snow fall, this is turning out to be a very dry spring. We received less than a half inch of rain each for April and May. 4 inches is normal. At least the temperatures are cooler than average. Do a rain dance for us.

The "lame duck," a crippled mallard who has been nesting here for at least a decade, is conpsicuously absent this season. He seemed healthy last year. Also absent are the white crowned sparrows. They were here 2 seasons in a row for a few weeks in late April/early May.

Also, this season, I got my first photos of a sand piper, taken at the Drayton Plains Nature Center. That bird is the subject of this edition's blog photo. I also got a photo of a horned lark just yesterday. The only place I have ever seen a horned lark is in the athletic field and adjoining parking lot of a nearby church where I walk Hanna the Wonder Dog each morning. Usually, it is too dark for photos. Yesterday, I walked over in mid afternoon to shoot wild flowers. The horned lark was scampering around the paved parking area. It was hard shooting, since the bird would not stay still. At least it let us walk up very close. I have not edited the shots yet. If I get any keepers, I will post it in the main gallery under "recent photos" for a few weeks; then move it to the "birds" section.

If you are reading this outside my main website, that gallery is at www.davelaporte.com

Thanks for all the hits!!!!
