| Boy, is it Hot by insomniac554 at 6/10/2008 1:40:27 PM

So I wake up today and discover much to my chagrin that I actually have an imprint of my body on my bed. I turn on the television and am shocked to discover that it is 85 degrees even though it is five o'clock in the morning. I have always been the type of person who deals with the cold much easier than the heat, and this weeks incredible and brutal heat wave has simple made this fact more apparent. When it is this hot, I can't sleep, I have trouble working out and I feel overwhelmingly lethargic. Combining lethargy and insomnia is not something any sane individual would want to ever do. There is nothing worse than being hot, sweaty and tired and yet unable to sleep.
Yet here is the rub. New York City is well-known by its long-term residents to be a terribly hot and humid place in the summer. This is hardly news, anyone who has ever lived through a summer here knows this already. But as uncomfortable and sticky and generally "blah" it is in the city in the summer, thats how nice it is the rest of the year.
There is a reason so many paintings, movies and songs have been written about the beauty of New York in autumn or spring. It is a truly spectacular place to be during these "other" seasons. And when you think about it, summer is only three months long. So we New Yorkers sacrifice our summer to the humidity gods in exchange for the paradise that is the rest of the year. One has to wonder what bearing this has on the other short-term sacrifices people make for thier long-term wellness. A question, I suppose, that will never be answered correctly for all.
