Embarking on a "New Journey" (Education-wise..)..
by unc005 at 8/18/2008 7:58:13 AM

So...

I had to jump through some hoops to become a student once again (since it'd been since May 2007--yup! WOAH!--since I was last enrolled..)..i.e. fill out a new student app. (fortunately I didn't have to take any placement tests over again..whew!), appeal and reappeal my financial aid, etc.

I have embarked on a new "journey" of sorts..as of today, I am "officially" a health care management technology student (woo hoo!). I'm getting away from the clinical aspect of health care and will be, instead, focusing on the "business" aspect, so to speak.

I can advance to a Masters degree at some point, should I choose to do so, as well as "specialize" in a certain area of HCM .

Anyway, I am excited, and I had already acquainted myself, somewhat, with the program coordinator, as we exchanged emails. I had wanted to know if HCM was the same as HIT (Health Informations Technology), and, of course, it isn't--it's involved strictly with medical records...and the like.

We also chit-chatted some, and she's a wonderful lady. I'm thoroughly going to enjoy this program, as well as having her for an instructor--I have her for 3 of my 4 classes (2 on campus--which are Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-2:30 pm & 2:30-4 pm, respectively, and 2 are online) this semester (LOL).

I will be taking: Principles of Financial Accounting (online), Introduction to Healthcare Management (on campus), Medical Terminology I (on campus), and lastly, Medical Legal Issues (online).

She told me, when I registered with her on Thursday, that I'd just breeze right through this program with my fairly vast knowledge of health care as is (i.e. having been a RN student, taken health care occupations educations classes in HS--which required me to learn medical terminology, etc.), and during HS, I competed at district/state/national levels in areas such as: medical spelling, medical terminology, knowledge tests on pathophysiology (for which I placed 3rd at state, and 10th at Nationals..way back in 2000), etc.

My two on campus classes are in the same room, so that's VERY convenient (I've always loved when I've been able to have back-to-back classes like this..LOL--call me weird, I know! LOL).

So..that's the "most positive" thing in my life right now..oh, and I got a VERY nice financial award amt.! Wow! It's about $300 more than what I thought at the time was the MAXIMUM amt. that a person could be awarded for a Pell Grant ($2025/semester). Once they take out all expenses/that's used to pay for expenses (books, tuition, any supplies that may be needed, etc.), they cut you a refund check for any remaining money left over. The first one is set to be distributed Sept. 19th. Woo hoo!

I got awarded $2,366.00 & $2,365.00, respectively (for each term). Woo hoo! My sister told me that what I had initially thought wasn't correct..LOL! I told her I SWORE that's what I'd heard all the years I'd been here at RCC (I plead the 5th on how long I've been here..it embarrasses me..LOL. *sigh*).

Anyway, there's one summer session (next summer), so it's 5 semesters and DOES have the option, like MOST programs here, to be obtained at night, but I didn't want to do that, of course.
