| A positive way to approach my upcoming 40th Bday by katrinasq at 1/30/2009 11:10:15 PM

My 40th birthday is coming up on Monday, and though I'm not really dreading it, I am not looking forward to it, either. Funny thing about these landmark birthdays: they make us evaluate where we are in life in terms of our goals and what not. It's really easy when something like this approaches to be negative about all the things we planned to have accomplished by now. There are two major categories in my life that I am working toward, but haven't accomplished: to have a great career, and to have a great relationship with the right man. I could dwell on the unfairness of life, that I worked my whole life toward a career, and worked on my marriage for 7 long years after it went bad and find myself single with an entry level job in spite of all my best efforts.
Then I got to thinking. I have a LOT more blessings in my life than disappointments. I've decided that I'm going to concentrate on the things I am thankful for and have a much better 40th than I originally thought. So, I am grateful for:
My Kids, of course, always top of the list - They are healthy, happy, and secure and are very loving and funny kids. They're growing up to be great people.
My Family and close friends - They always offer me unwavering love and support
My Pets - Who always offer unconditional love and companionship. I really enjoy interacting with them.
My Health - after a couple cancer scares, I am especially grateful to be very healthy. I'm also working on weight loss, exercise, and making changes so I have a healthy diet.
My Christian Faith - I go to church very infrequently even though I enjoy it very much when I do go. My faith has always been important to me, and no matter what kind of day I have had, saying my prayers before I go to sleep gives me a sense of peace.
My Education - I have been blessed to have had a good education fresh out of high school and to be in a great program now for a second bachelor's.
My Jobs - As much as it sucks that I have to work two jobs to stay ahead after working so hard to put myself through college, both past and present, I am grateful to be employed at all, and that I am able to work to stay ahead.
My Home - Though it doesn't want to sell in this market so I can relocate to find that ever elusive career, I SOOOOO love my house. It just suits me. I have redecorated it all the way through, and since I bought it after the divorce, it truly is all mine.
Arkansas - I relocated here a couple years ago from my lifetime home in NY state, and not only is the weather warmer here, there is so much more sunshine! The western part of the state is home to both the Ozark and Ouachita mountains, and it is beautiful here through all 4 seasons.
My Ex, believe it or not - You hear so much these days about ex drama, and I am grateful for the friendly nature of our relationship. He takes care of the cs better than most, and is flexible about taking the kids on nights I work or letting me have them on his night if it is my night off. He has helped me some on my kitchen remodel, and has helped me with my car a couple times. His gf lives with him, and she is great to my kids. Granted, I am flexible and easy to get along with, too, but it definitely could have been a lot worse.
And last, but not least...
My Tax Refund - Thanks to my refund, I am paying off what little credit card debt I have, so the only debt I will have is my house and my college loan. Most Excellent!
