| Personals websites and the mysteries of the female psyche by kayputk at 2/10/2009 8:38:00 PM

Years ago I did an experiment. I posted a fabricated profile pretending to be a wealthy business owner trying to find somebody who "isn't just interested in my money." The control for the experiment was a normal profile.
A surprisingly large number of women initiated contact and sent messages expressing great interest in the wealthy fabricated bachelor. Nobody contacted the control bachelor.
From long experience, I've found that I'm doing quite well if I get a response from 1 in 10 women who I send a message. If, in real life, I tried to talk to 10 women and got totally ignored by 9 of them, I would figure I'd accidentally wandered into a group of unusually stuck-up snobs.
I would like to discover a satisfactory explanation for this behavior. One that does not leave me with a lowered opinion of the female psyche.
