I wonder what it is about the Internet that makes people think that the standard rules of politeness do not apply. I remember when speaking to someone would automatically initiate, by simple courtesy, a response. A simple, "Hi, nice to meet you," or something along those lines.

Nowadays, and especially since the rise in popularity of Internet contact, it seems like initiating contact with someone through this source automatically puts you in their debt. In other words, you OWE the contactee something simply because you initiated the contact. I'd even be okay with that if I knew WHAT it was that I owe them!!!

C'mon, people... how much effort does it really take to write, "Thank you for contacting me, but I'm really not interested at this time,"??? Beyond that, how much effort does it really take to let someone know WHY you're not interested?

How would you want that person to treat you if the position was reversed?

I totally agree with you. And in addition to that, when someone does respond to your email and explains why they aren't interested (perhaps distance is the reason), don't keep hounding them. It's all a matter of common courtesy which a lot of people seem to be lacking these days.

Actually, no one has responded to me, EVER, to tell me they're not interested. They just don't respond, period... I guess I'm supposed to assume that means they're not interested, but it sure leaves me with a lot of questions and frustration.
