Normal Man Marries Oblong Woman
by nenebubbles at 5/28/2009 7:53:39 AM

That was a headline on the social pages of the Normalite or Pantagraph newspaper many years ago (I think, around 1948). In Illinois there is a town called Normal and about sixty miles away is a town named Oblong. It was sent to the Reader's Digest as one of their humorous stories.

It was later mentioned in a satirical book about the provincialness and isolation of the Midwest. The author said that was in the newspaper when the leading news in more important papers was a stock market plunge and many other national crises.

But the events that really affect our lives and the ones we keep our interest are births, marriages, and deaths. Our community likes to know these things because these events are things we can do something about ... buy a gift, attend the celebration, or pay our respects.

On our DH community, we are interested in our cyber friends and the milestones in their lives ...
Have they met the Normal man or the Oblong woman?
How did that work out?
Are they and their family well?
How are they holding up under some stress in their life?
What funny or interesting thing happened to them?

.... Still looking for a good normal man ... oblong is a shape too .. But not sure it is for marriage.

I have come to the conclusion, anything short of murder is "Normal" Why is it necessary to catalog a person by some unorthodox measure ? We have been reared to measure up to something or someone elses vision.. Morals and values retain the high degree of discipline but I do feel the rules of social order should be more relaxed....Thanks ..this is a good blog, nene.... Hi Jeannette....

Hi, Jeanette ... I am still trying to figure what "normal" is too. And Rose, you are correct, values and morals are discipline and social order can be relaxed. Thank you for your comments.

HI Nene, I wanted to post on your blog, cause I love ya , but seriously I don't know what normal is, oblong I know is a shape , as is round like me, as for the normal part, confusing as it may be, I am just not right.... I believe.. and if that isn't confusing ,well I don't know what is... send the white coats for me...

Thanks, Jenny ... love the phrase "lost in the yesterday of normal" Sassy ... You are not in need of white coats and normal is a fleeting moment in memory and it changes with time.

Hi, Nene! I just love the local newspapers..it seems to me that people don't read them much anymore. We have local newspapers in our small little burgs and they sometimes are a hoot to read. They write about peoples cows getting out of the pasture and stopping traffic and the social events such as Verna's sister in laws brother and sister visiting for a week and where they lunched on Thursday. Sometimes they even do a little piece on the best tomatoes to grow and who had the biggest. I like it because to me, it's just normal...

Well personally I don't want to be normal and I would love to be oblong - wouldn't that mean I might could be tall..... But normal is for boring people and I never want to be boring - but now i'm sleepy so i'm going to bed like normal people

The way I read it Nene its "Abnormal" that is questionable...Oblong is sixty miles from Normal...Now what is so "Abnormal" of Oblong being that far from Normal....????... Please only respond if ...your "Abnormal"..

I've never lived on either side of normal. And that's not just in Indiana either.

normal for me is square, four perfect exact matching corners, no need to pick one. oblong never considered this concept, two matched ends. i am almost certain normal/oblong people would come here and lurk! very good thought really, hometown news

Settee ... sounds like the Normalite paper moved to your area. 10s ... normal is fleeting as is tall. Les ... since I have moved from Normal, I guess I am abnormal. Altgarn ... LOL, but you sure have lived and given a lot of smiles. See2 ... and how about circles? Thank you all for visiting and sharing your humour and comments.

GREAT post Jeanette! Now to clear things up just a bit, I live just north of Normal, which, from what I hear is better than living south of Normal. But one would never find me in Normal - round peg square hole (or however that is said) sort of thing ya know

Darling Widbey ... now you know that being in Normal at the Garlic Press, Medici, The CoffeeHouse, and/or the Normal Theatre is FUN .. and the University provides enough squares and pi to make things interesting ... Hope I make it for the Sugar Creek Art Show when I RETURN TO NORMAL ... Truly enjoy telling people I am returning to Normal.

You are too funny Nene! But of course I visit Medici's and Maggie Miley's, especially the Garlic Press, however they are visits to Normal and then I return to that place just north of Normal When you return to Normal please call so we can catch up over coffee or dinner at one of those aforementioned normal places
