| Why do people join these dating sights?

I have wondered for quite some time why people join these dating sites. I joined hoping that I could meet some new people. To date or not does not matter to me. I would be happy just to find some more fishing partners. Maybe people are afraid to meet because they think it means you have an obligation after. Can someone answer this? Can't people just be friends? I know "let's just be friends" can be a vile phrase, but friends are ok too.
