Nuthin' but a number
by catmabel at 6/30/2009 12:15:38 PM

Remember that old thing about "age ain't nuthin' but a number." It's so true.

When I was 18 and newly married, people used to say I looked older than I was. Now widowed, people tell me I look younger than I am.

I've decided the reason is my long dark hair. Yeah, way back in the day, it was naturally dark. Now it's, uh, enhanced. But that's about all there is that's changed.

Except for the few pounds I've put on and the way my body is softer than it was. You know what I mean. Poke a finger in my tummy and like the Pillbury Doughboy's, I'll giggle. So will you, because abs of steel, I most certainly do not have.

Some folks don't think the tradeoff is worth it. You know the ones. They'd rather use their free time climbing to nowhere on a step machine or their available cash for Botox or some nip and tuck. Me, I figure life's short and getting shorter. I'm not giving up time with the grandkids or taking the dog to the doggie park so that my thighs are an inch thinner or my tummy slightly flatter.

I know when I get compliments, it's for the real me, because friends say things like "You always make me laugh" or "I know I can talk to you and you'll understand."

And to me, that beats buns of steel any day.
