Losing a pet.
by kevin0077 at 7/21/2009 8:26:39 PM

It's kind of funny, in a "que sera, sera" sort of way, how even though we know we will probably out live our dog we can never be ready for losing him or her forever. We being anyone who has or has had a pet.
My dog died last Saturday. His name was Cheech, and he was a really good dog. I haven't had him for the last seven months because where I'm living now pets aren't allowed. Except fish; if they get loose they don't get very far.
My parents had been taking care of him, and I planned on bringing him to Hastings as soon as I could. He was only ten years old. And being only ten pounds, I thought he might have another five years.
I should clarify; he was put to sleep. A week before he was, he started having seizures which progressively got worse. The vet figured it was a brain tumor; most likely malignant. It wasn't clear if he would survive surgery, so the tough decision had to be made.
I wasn't able to be there to see him one last time. My parents told me they held him while he was given the fatal injection. I know they cared for him as much as I did. He really was a character. He made a lot of people smile.
I know this is a sad story, and one might ask why I would even post it for anyone to read. I could end this by saying this is a warning; don't get a pet because you'll get too attached. But I'm posting it for those who have a pet that isn't a tortoise that will out live them. I'm posting it in hopes those people spend more quality time with their pet.
