| Good and Evil... (your thoughts?) by cthulhu_dreams at 7/31/2009 3:45:36 PM

I believe that there is nothing that holds sway over mankind, other than his own psyche and superstitions.
For instance, good and evil are naught but ideas that have made their way into the minds of men. Good is decided by victors and kings, not by the defeated or the victims.
A serial killer does not believe that his actions are unjust or unfair, he acts upon his instincts that had been bore through a unique and more than likely troubled life. But he is no more evil than you or I. There can exist some boundary of right and wrong, but people are sometimes thrust into making decisions that put others in bad spots, and occasionally condemning them to death.
This is especially true in todays economic society, where we are facing a depression as bad as the 1930's. People are desperate, and robbery has doubled in rate, some places tripled. But it's not out of evil, it's out of desperation, and sometimes love.
It is for this purpose that I do not condone religion. For the foundation of most religious practices is the fact that if you do not believe, you will perish and suffer. This makes the followers and practitioners very hostile or violent towards anyone with an opposing view. For that reason alone, I find that those of Christian faiths are usually not caring enough towards others, and are usually the first to cast judgement. Even the Bible itself says not to judge others, for that is not their place. Still, Christians think they are the ones to decide who is deserving of love and who isn't. They believe they have the right to choose between good and evil.
Hypocrisy runs rampant, and the zealots do what they will. Their ears are deaf, and their eyes have been torn from their sockets. They will not pay attention to reason. They are living the life that has been thrust upon them.
Everyone is just as guilty of faults in their life. Who cares if it's theft, abuse, or genocide? They're all in the wrong, and should be treated as such, but they should not be condemned as evil.
As an Atheist, I try not to let myself fall victim to the same shortcomings that most Christians allow themselves to stumble upon so freely, but it is hard to make it in a world where such dogmatic views are so prevalent.
I love the world... but I could do without most of its people.
