Schizophrenia (SKITS-oh-FREEN-ee-uh)---one of the most damaging of all mental disorders---causes its victims to lose touch with reality. They often begin to hear, see, or feel things that aren't really there (hallucinations) or become convinced of things that simply aren't true (delusions). In the paranoid form of this disorder, they develop delusions of persecution or personal grandeur. The first signs of paranoid schizophrenia usually surface between the ages of 15 and 34. There is no cure, but the disorder can be controlled with medications. Severe attacks may require hospitalization.

Schizophrenia usually develops gradually, although onset can be sudden. Friends and family often notice the first changes before the victim does. Among the signs are:
Confusion
Inability to make decisions
Hallucinations
Changes in eating or sleeping habits, energy level, or weight
Delusions
Nervousness
Strange statements or behavior
Withdrawal from friends, work, or school
Neglect of personal hygiene
Anger
Indifference to the opinions of others
A tendency to argue
A conviction that you are better than others, or that people are out to get you

Drugs such as Thorazine, Haldol, and Risperdal combat symptoms in 4 out of 5 patients. An acute attack usually can be cleared up in 4 to 8 weeks. Counseling and group therapy help recovering patients to understand the disease and to function effectively.

Without medication and therapy, most paranoid schizophrenics are unable to function in the real world. If they fall victim to severe hallucinations and delusions, they can be a danger to themselves and those around them.

Thanks, Safetygirl, for all the information. The sad thing, is how to help someone with this disorder. I think, for my own personal safety, that this type of person is a danger, both emotionally, and physically. If we believed that the only thing we can do is to control the controllables in our own life, and I believed that someone has been afflicted with this disorder, this would be the very person that I would stay clear of, for my own protection, and the protection of other's that I have come to love. Being responsible for oneself can bring the greatest joys in how you live your life...

Was this really pointed at me? I can identify with all of those symptoms. No alcohol needed either!

One other thing..... I thought this horse was dead. But let's give it a few kicks just to make sure!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. This is also directed to the "dead horse" as Topend puts it. Where were you when there was pages and pages of posts ranting and raving over a joke? Oh yea....you were ranting and raving too Brent. And for those that think he has dropped it...try reading Tazz's profile.

I know that, Safety.......but creating this post/blog only to create 'band wagon' nonsense. That is just my opinion. Hope that you, Ranger and Tazz find a way to get over all of the squabblings.

I grew up very closely around someone who was a paranoid schizophrenic. They were committed for a month so that the help they needed could be administered. The commitment was totally out of love for the person. Without that intervention, so many other lives would have been adversely affected, harmed and scarred. This was not band wagon nonsense - it was done out of HOPE that recognition of some of the traits might strike a chord and that help could be sought. You can have your opinion as to my intent. But I KNOW my intent. It was without malice.
