Dumb As A Box of Rocks
by sherri_ at 10/4/2009 12:05:19 PM

I'm capable of absolutely stunning brilliance...sometimes even impressing mah-self.

And then I can turn around and demonstrate I'm dumb as a box 'o' rocks. Dumber, even.

Today is dumb and dumber. My beloved Poulon Pro (that I haven't named yet). It's been three trees or so since I sharpened the chain (yes, I sharpen my own chains) and it was REALLY grody inside the casing with twig pieces and such so I decided to do a little routine maintenance.

Took the face plate off and scraped off all the oily gunk and crud. That's always my first mistake in anything power tool-ish...taking the face plate off.

I once decided to clean the tractor's carburetor and with my handy Reader's Digest Fix It Yourself manual set to work. I had a bowl full of shiny clean carburetor parts when the Sears Tractor Ghod showed up to get my tractor started.

"I saved you some work and took it apart for you!". He laughed.

So I finagle the face plate back on my unamed Poulon Pro..that's a jobbie, you have to align the do-jiggie on the adjustment screw into the hole on the bar. All clean now, I commence to sharpening the chain.

I like to use a Sharpie, red, to mark my starting point...I sharpen to the edge of the bar and go to pull the chain forward to sharpen the next section...I have no movement, that chain ain't budging.

1.5 hours later and removing/reinstalling the ENTIRE assembly at LEAST fifteen times, I finally got the chain to move around the bar & pulley.

Ahem. The unnamed Poulon Pro has a safety gizom, a kickback shield. When not running you're supposed to slide the handle forward, it automagically slides forward in case of a sudden jam or kickback.

Yes, it took me 1.5 hours to realize that with the safety gizmo engaged the chain won't move around the bar.

Ah, Dunewolf, you prolly use one of those Manly Man saws--gas; I use a girly electric, the weight of a gas one or rather, holding all that weight in front of me, tears my aged spine to pieces. I've used the Homelite electric, burned it right up . My last one was a 16" Remington, it was okay but I'm lurvin' this Poulon Pro 18" long time. I need to give it a name. I name all my favorite pieces of machinery ya know.

Catsmam, Mensa ain't the only one looking for me...I hear there's also a village. That last one is what keeps my noggin' a small enough diameter to fit thru the bathroom door
