A Drive Alone
by happy2lucky at 10/12/2009 1:05:22 PM

With Autumn in full swing I've wanted to drive up into the mountains to see the vibrant foliage, photograph my excursion and visit any festivals that might be available. Sunday proved the be the perfect day to do so since the rain decided to hold off and the sun made frequent and warm appearances. The opportunity to get out of town, alone, and just drive north was exhilarating. Anticipation got the better of me and I found myself wanting to hurry to reach the mountains, but I managed to gain control and focused on the scenery instead. I started in Ellijay and spent the day driving across the mountains, ending up in Helen just as the sun was setting.

My favorite part of the day was taking pictures at a petting zoo for children with baby pygmy goats, chicks, piglets, kittens, etc. I loved the expressions on the faces of the children as they interacted with the animals. The Apple Festival provided fresh apple pastries and my fav, apple butter. The landscapes and farms took me back to my childhood and growing up in the country. I must admit that I was disappointed that there really was no fall color. Most of the landscape was still a vibrant green. (Apparently from the deluge of rain here in Ga. these past few months.) I was really hoping for that incredible, colorful fall foliage of bright orange, red, gold and bronze.

Even without the color, I loved every moment of my drive. Having the opportunity to spend a day exploring a gorgeous part of Georgia, alone, with ample time to contemplate what an amazing world we live in was healing to me. Once again, I realize how fortunate that I am. It's obvious that these days so many of us struggle with schedules and responsibilities and have little time for ourselves. It is truly medicinal and rejuvenating to have the opportunity to recharge by spending time treating yourself every now and then. I find that it makes me a better person and a better parent in the long run.

My advice to you - Don't forget to take time out for yourself. You deserve it.

I find long drives are cathartic - the scenery pokes at our memories and nudges our fantasies of past, present, and future life. Very nice post.

Fall is my favorite time of the year. I can walk out onto my deck and see the vibrant colors of the Mt......I do often walk the mountain. It sounds like you had a wonderful day. There is nothing more Spiritual then spending time with nature.
