Update on my knee accident
by anne654 at 10/13/2009 5:54:36 AM

2 weeks ago I stepped off my raised flower bed, when I did the right foot folded under and the left knee hit the concrete driveway, twisting as it went down. Seen the orthopedic surgeon, got the MRI and went back yesterday to find out what the problem is. While the knee was injured, it will heal on it's own. The big problem is I fractured the tibia right below the knee joint. If it displaces, then we have to go in and put pins in it in surgery. So for another 4 weeks I stay in the knee immobilizer and use the walker, very minimal weight bearing on it, can only work 4 hours a day instead of my usual 10, stay off it at home, and be very careful not to fall again! I go back to see him in 4 weeks, do more x-rays, and see if it is healing or not. To complicate it I have osteoporosis.
I must admit, this has been a humbling learning experience for me. Using a walker to get around, you meet wonderful helpful people and those who just ignore your attempts to get in a door by yourself. When going through a buffet line at dinner Saturday night, a kind soul stepped up and asked if they could help carry my plate. I have to get a friend who owns a cleaning business come in and clean my house for me weekly until who knows when. That will be a first, glad it is a friend. My daughter is now my legs, I can drive a car but walking around a big grocery store is out. I could use the electric cart and have, but I am supposed to really limit my walking. So it is easier to just send her in.
I can see I will get lots of reading and needlework done in the next 4 weeks!
I do hope to avoid surgery, that would mean another 4-6 weeks of down time.

Anne I pray no more falls and a quick healing for the tibia..I know what its like to use a walker and have people get inpatient when you dont move fast enough..Take care and baby your self...

I went from rabbit speed to turtle speed. I now have to plan each time I get out of bed to get the most done I can before getting back in. I can do some of my work at home and my boss has already called once this morning to ask about something, I am his right hand woman and thankfully the phone is right by my bed. Yes, I am learning to ask for help, have been told I am stubborn, who me? A very humbling experience, and I am learning to take care of me for a change.

Anne, that is the important thing - taking care of yourself! I can relate to your frustration as I have had both knees replaced and experienced the limited mobility while healing. And, yes, stubborn is my middle name!

Anne, In reading of your unfortunate circumstances, I began to think.....If this had happened to me, just what would my life look like, No job and no money unless I am able to go out and sell, do daughter or anyone who would care to take me around I think, Pain...I don't do pain well, I am not "The Brave Soldier" God Bless you, heal you instantly, and send people and angels to help you. Thank you for this blog as it has given me a chance to have empathy for someones elses setbacks and cease whining about my own.

Thinking good things for you lady. Do what they say and you will be away from that walker soon. Trust me, I know... I walked with one decorated in ribbons by my granddaughter on July 4th. Now, I walk miles again. When they tell you to excercise, DO IT!!

Trust me, I look forward to the day they finally say I can walk again! I am normally a very active person and this inactivity is getting to me. My walker is decorated with a Winnie the Pooh book bag, we call it my kangaroo pouch, it carries stuff for me. And tennis balls to make it slide easier on my hardwood floors. I am hoping we do not have to pin the break, but it is a 50/50 chance at best. I will never take walking for granted again! Glad you are doing well Still
