"MY HERO....."
by brwneyed_angel at 10/18/2009 6:11:08 AM

She's really a very simple person...heart as big as Dallas. Never turns anyone down when they're in need. Always an open door, and a ready smile. She somehow manages to make good things happen for undeserving people...and they all know this... so she gets taken advantage of quite frequently. Ever since I've known her, she's been the very most gentle person I could ever want to be near. Know what??? She didn't drive a car till she was probably around the age of maybe sixty...then a couple of us took her out for driving lessons. I must say, these were some pretty scarey and kinda dangerous things for us to do. Why, one day she's out for her driving lesson, the person teaching her decided it's time to take her out on the interstate. Boy, was that hilarious??? !!! See, there was a pick-up truck driving down the interstate in front of her..the truck had a load of furniture, and a mattress from a baby bed had fallen off the truck and was right there...in the middle of her right hand lane she was traveling. My sister, who was her "instructor" for that day...she's thinking.."Nuh, no way she's going to run over that mattress..she'll go to the other lane, 'fore she gets to it.." NOT!!! Here she goes, right over the middle of the mattress, straddles it, drags it beneath the car... inner contents of the mattress stuck all under the car..do I smell something burning,?? Yep, I do...she's trying to look around, wanting to see what my sister was laughing about so hard..."Oh no, don't turn around...keep your eyes on the road>."
One other time, I'm the instructor...took her to the same road I used to train for my driver license.. we're going down the dirt road, laughing, as we always did...then I remembered this little wooden bridge was ahead, and SHE had to drive over it...this bridge was a small one-driver-at-a-time bridge, had the boards going long ways across it for to get your tires on,and drive across.. we're nearing this point, I tell her to slow down a little, 'cause there's a one lane bridge ahead..she slows down...round the curve, she sees this bridge..she stops, dead still, looks at the bridge, tells me.."There's no way I'm gonna drive over that bridge..there's no rails, nothing." I tell her to just put the car back into gear, ease up to the bridge, get evened up with the boards..eases ahead a little more, drives to the bridge, still going slow, then all of a sudden, she PUNCHES IT...va-room......She tells me, as I'm sitting in the passenger seat, completely in shock...she says to me "WHEE-E-E-E-E-E......I'M GITTIN' OFF THIS THING.." I know that man outside in his yard burning leaves must have thought he was about to be ran over by an old lady that had just conked out, and was coming in for the kill...he looked up quickly, then threw his head straight up and laughed like a hyena, as he realized what she'd just done. Of course, I'm still wondering why in the world did this ol' woman be so brave..enough to cross this little bridge with her foot glued to the accelerator...?? I dared not ask her, I was too busy laughing, after I'd completely had to pull up my drawers.
This is only one of a lifetime of beautiful memories that I can share with anyone who wants to listen...she was a very giving person...would do whatever it required to do for her kids.... all six of us..and then some. You needed a place to stay for a few days...just ring her doorbell, it's done. You need a place to stay for a few months, ring the doorbell. You need a place to move in, and stay for a year or so??
There's the doorbell, and the completely nice sound of the chimes in the doorbell........they couldn't even begin to sound as mellow and inviting as she would greet you..."Come on in, I've been expecting you." I fully believe that on Nov. 1, 2008...as I held her in my arms, and she slowly crossed from this life to the new one, the next one...I KNOW that God looked at her and said, "COME ON IN, I'VE BEEN EXPECTING YOU."
IN MEMORY OF MY PRECIOUS MOTHER, MY HERO.
