Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest.
by nenebubbles at 10/29/2009 2:16:40 PM

There was a man who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So he sent them each on a quest: to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.

The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall.

When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen.

The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted.

The second son said it was covered with green buds and full of promise.

The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful; it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen.

The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life and fulfillment.

The man then explained to his sons that they were all right because they had each seen but only one season in the tree's life.

He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season, and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life can only be measured at the end when all the seasons are up.

If you give up when it's winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, fulfillment of your fall.

Moral: Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest.

Don't judge life by one difficult season.

Persevere through the difficult patches and better times are sure to come some time or later.

****This is for my friends going through a difficult patch. (Elzi .. what would your new book say about this?) I received the above story from a friend in an e-mail today ...

When the leaves on the trees start turning colors, all I can think of is the cold winter to come. As I drove to the airport last week, I did notice how pretty the trees were. When I drove home from the airport, I noticed how the leaves were mostly gone already. I tend to hibernate from now until about April. I had a date tonight that I cancelled because I just don't want to go out in the cold and rain. It's difficult for me to see beyond this crappy weather. I need to move back to CA.

Ika, I would like to think that our best season yet is ahead. After all, we have reached the season in our lives when we count our blessings.

Thanks so much for sharing this, Nene. I needed it. Even though I have a mesquite tree right outside my office window which would fit into this story, I have to keep reminding myself in the winter of it's promise for the rest of the seasons. Our mesqute trees are out calendars around here oftentimes, and sometimes I need to use the calendar of another's life to keep mine on an even keel. Again, thanks for the share.

I would expect nothing better and written so nicely from a distinguished educator and a farm gal to say the least and her experiencing and accepting the seasons accordingly

Thank you, Missy

I like the idea of a mesquite tree being a calendar, Cactus

So true, Louie, there is always so much more to a person

Les, I do so love the seasons and you are kind with your comments.
