Great Adventure Day 5

Day 5, Sunday, September 2nd Canute, OK to Alma, AR –

When I hit Oklahoma I moved into another time zone. Now it is Central. Since Arizona has to be different and not do Daylight Savings time it is the same as California even though it is in the Mountain Time zone. It seemed as if my life was popping by, not just in hours, but in minute-hours. The real “hour changes” from Pacific to Mountain and Central happened within several hours. I felt as if my life was just flashing ahead; growing hours older by the minute. Perhaps when I drive home I will feel as if the Fountain of Youth has touched me and I will be getting younger. I hope so. All this camping stuff has me feeling older every day.

The Elk City/Clinton campground which actually is in Canute is run by another nice set of folks.

So, I go to take my morning shower and there is a bug in the shower. He is over on the side and not doing much of anything but trying to stay out of the water. Live and let live I say. Besides, I hate to kill those beetle type bugs; they are too messy. I am keeping an eye on him as I shower, just in case he comes closer. I am glad it wasn’t hair washing day because it is really hard to keep one eye on a bug and shower at the same time. I lost him for a moment and then found him behind the shower curtain. He probably wished me gone as much as I did him. I quickly finished and left the shower all to him. Whew, survived that one without touching a bug.

Before I left the area I drove down to Clinton Lake. It is a small lake and appears to have been created by some sort of refinery. Being in Oklahoma everything is red dirt, red rocks etc. I took some pictures but I don’t think they are worth emailing.

I did take some pictures of the inside of my tent trailer for those who are curious.

My trailer, when opened up, is 21 ft. 4 inches long, 8 ft. 9 inches wide with an interior height of 6 ft. 8 inches. Instead of rooms there are designated areas; master bedroom area, kitchen area, bathroom area, dinning area, living room area, guest bedroom area, office area, pet area.

I was really glad to be driving through Oklahoma City on a Sunday afternoon. There was hardly any traffic. As I continued east the country side got greener and greener. I passed by a wonderful huge lake; Lake Eufaula and the Arkansas River.

I arrived at the campsite in Alma just after dark at about 8:30. The office had closed. The campsites have something set up for night registration. If you have already registered they leave a little brochure/map with your name on it and your place marked. For those that haven’t pre-registered there is a list of open spots, a form to fill out and an envelope. It was very dark. In fact I had my Brights on. The other campgrounds had been well lit, this one wasn’t It was advertised as having tree lined sites, which it did with very few lights. My map had a funny note about calling a number. When I did a grumpy man answered and started firing off directions to my campsite. I didn’t understand him and told him I was confused. He said he was in the bathroom and as soon as he finished he would be down. As he hung up, I heard him mumble something about some people not understanding anything. Since I was tired I felt like crying and wanted to leave because he was so nasty, but told myself that, that was not a “girl power” way of behaving. I decided to ignore his behavior and be polite since I did not have another place to go. I stopped where I was and waited. I really didn’t want to get myself in a situation in the dark where I would have to back-up the trailer. A small pick-up truck went by me then stopped. A man got out, came over and asked me, “didn’t you see me wave”. I said, "No, I couldn’t see anything because it was dark". He snapped back for me to turn off my Brights and follow him. He led me to my campsite which I appreciate but he could have been a lot nicer. I guess when you interrupt someone when they are doing their duty they get grouchy. I was thinking of suggesting to him that a large glass of orange juice every morning works as well as prunes but I did not see him the next day.

This was my least favorite campsite, not just because of the grouchy guy but also because I was blocks away from the restrooms. I did get a Porta-Potty with my trailer. It isn’t built-in but there is a special sized little cupboard to store it. I decided that it was time to start using it. I read the instructions several times and ended up with an extra cap. So far nothing untoward has happened but I do wonder what I was supposed to do with that cap. Is this “too much info”? This is how a camper’s life goes though.

End of Day 5; More Later.
