| Oh, look, another dating site!

Internet dating is one of those things that I look at, and wonder "What are people thinking?" The sheer absurdity of the concept is mind-boggling. And yet, how many dating sites are there now?
Do a Google search on "free dating sites" and you get hit after hit after hit....and some of them aren't exactly free, for real -- they let you sign up for free, post a profile for free, but if you actually want to CONTACT anybody, it's credit card time.
I used a pay site for 3 months back in 2006. I will say this, I got a LOT of mail there, mostly from local people, but not a single one was really datable. About 80% of them, somewhere in their correspondence, said something along the lines of "Why don't you meet me at [insert name of bar] tonight around 8:00?"
And I'm thinking, "Hun, if you bothered to read my profile, you'd know I don't drink and I don't go to bars." And I would hear that AOL e-mail announcer guy saying "Goodbye!" in the back of my mind.
I've spent the last 15 months on another free site, the last few as a forum moderator, and it's been a good experience. I've learned a lot. There are great people over there. Nobody datable, though.
So -- time to try something else. I don't really have much in the way of expectations anymore. This last gf really damaged me, and I have serious doubts about ever being able to trust anyone again.
But you never know....
