Where I Am From
by haitiangirl at 3/15/2008 7:36:57 PM

I am from a very dark place that is filled with poverty,
People dying from left to right, girls and women gettting raped
Men give no respect to women

I am from carrying water miles after miles on top of my head
During the rain , the wind and a hot temperature
Sleeping on dirty clothes on a cement floor,
People crossing over me like I am nobody
Waking up with the bang of bullets going off from left to right

I am from waking up next to my sister
On the ground who accidentally made a puddle
I am from washing my sisters' diapers,
Looking after them and myself everyday in the year

I am from worrying about where I would sleep and
What I would eat after a rainy day
I am from going to church, praising the Lord
And giving thanks to Him for my entire blessing

I am from selling fruit juice to pay for my school tuition
I am from sticky blood drifting down my back
After experiencing what it felt like being shot!
I am from giggling with my friends after we share a secret

I am from running from difficult times after seeing
My mother on the hospital bed
I am from not knowing who my father was
Until the age of thirteen
I am from knowing the true meaning of pain
After hearing my mother die

I am from moving from one country to another
Living with new family and learning about a different culture
I am from experiencing the feeling of melting cold, wet, fluffy,
Star shapped thing for the first time of my life
I am from an illiterate, poor, strong, brave and beautiful
Human being who is no longer living on this planet
I am from a Haitian woman
I am Haitian-American
