| The debate on evolution by orioles2131 at 4/24/2008 1:04:48 AM
In 1855, Charles Darwin,...published his famous theory of evolution of the species. Today, it remains among the most hotly contested, and debated topics in America. Little has changed since the beginning of the Cival War,...when it was probably at it's most controversial peak. In a famous Pulitzer Prize historical novel, Michael Shaara uses General George Pickett's analogy to a group of his peers at the Battle of Gettysburg. He had heard one of his brigade commanders,... Louis Armistead, staunchly defend the theory and sarcasticly challenge Pickett on the subject in front of General Lee's second in command, ... James Longstreet "All science trembles before the syrian logic of your firey intellect George, he announced!" General Picket proclaimed that he would, indeed, put the matter to rest for all time. He stated: "Gentlemen,.... I suppose there are some of you among us that believe you are decended from the ape! I suggest thst perhaps even some of you believe that I, sir,....am decended from an ape! BUT,....I CHALLENGE the man who would claim that General Robert E.Lee was decended from an ape!!" Here, here, now! HARDLY, sir!! Now then,,, just how many of your family was decended from apes???????
