| THE RIVER by 4la2x2 at 4/25/2008 10:56:01 PM
There is a section of a river that I claim as my own…I don’t own a deed to it or anything like that; it is just that this river is very special to me. I go boating there. My children fish there. We picnic there. And, I take walks along its banks. There is a beautiful path running along one bank. It is paved and broad. Many people walk, jog or bicycle down this path. I walk the path and watch these people enjoy my river. Today I saw a father walking with his children along this path and talking to them about life. It brought a smile to my face. I thought the father is wise to teach by this river. It is a good river and a good place to teach the children.
The other side has a dirt path running along the bank. This path goes through woods and is quite rustic. Few people take this path. I walk there if I am in the mood for solitude. I listen to the wild birds and watch the squirrels search for hidden treasures. I also think about all the other people who saw this river before me. I think of the American Indians, the early settlers and older people. Today I saw an old woman walking this path. As we passed each other we said hello. I was astonished by the girlish quality of her voice. Who knows maybe she was young once and walked the banks with her loved one.
I know the river has been there before I was born and I know it will keep on flowing long after I am gone. I hope the river gives pleasure and peace to all strangers who share my special place.
