Learning to scuba dive together can be a fun date, or series of dates, even if you're a pro.
Singles and couples alike are always looking for a new way to enjoy time together. Whether it’s a new idea for a date or a planned weekend adventure together as a couple, scuba diving goes far beyond the dinner-and-a-movie mindset.
Granted, conversation is limited to before and after, but what a conversation it will be. From exploring the ocean depths to enjoying nature’s unmatched beauty, there is so much that could come from simply learning to scuba dive together.
If you are considering entering into the fascinating world under the water, then start with a beginning diver’s course. This will instruct in the basics of safe diving via class sessions and pool instruction. Instructors will usually provide at least four actual dives in oceans or lakes.
While most scuba classes provide equipment for the pool sessions, you may want to purchase the necessary equipment to use in the ocean dives. Scuba equipment, weights, and wetsuits are available at Divers Discount and will be required to complete the classes. Additionally, most schools offer a student kit which will include a log book, textbook, workbook, and dive tables.
Training programs which offer international certification will take approximately 35 hours. This can be completed in two weekends or over several weeks, whichever accommodates your schedule.
A local dive shop or the Professional Association for Diving Instructors (PADI) will be able to give you the information on local courses, requirements, and costs.
Another option is to go on vacation to a warm spot, such as Belize, the Caribbean, or the South Pacific to either completely learn the skill of scuba diving, or complete the ocean dives required there, after fulfilling the portions of the courses that can be given year-round in a heated pool. Again, PADI will be able to provide a search engine to show you the options available at the destination of your choice, for dive centers as well as resorts.
As such, it is possible to do your classroom training and practice session in a pool, as well as the written work, at a local scuba instructor’s site. You will then be given the form documenting your completion of the first part of training. Once you arrive at your tropical vacation of choice, arrangements can be made to complete the open water training with the instructor of your choice. This is recommended for divers who intend only warm water diving. For cold water diving, it is recommended that all training be completed in the same cold waters you desire to explore.
If you have children you would like to take along on this adventure, note that anyone 10 years old or older, in good health, is accepted in scuba instruction. There are even some programs for kids younger than 10 years old. Children eight years old and up can begin their lessons in learning the art of scuba diving. Ten to twelve year-olds need to dive with certified adults. At age 15, you are legally allowed to receive your open-water scuba certification, simply by completing the course-required activities. |
