People often wonder if members are screened in any way, or verified somehow.
Screening members is a very difficult job. The internet provides almost
complete anonymity to people, as such there is really no way to know for sure
if someone is who he says he is. But a good dating site will always review each
and every member profile and picture, disapproving those that are deemed
inappropriate according to the site's stated guidelines. This varies from site
to site, but in general the goal is to make sure only valid profiles get
approved, and vulgar or sexually explicit profiles are not approved. If the
dating site you are using does not at least provide this level of screening,
you would probably be better off going to a different site, as you will end up
experiencing more frustration than anything else. Fake profiles, getting
spammed, and other problems will occur.
A note on free dating sites
Free dating sites are often the target of spammers. A spammer is someone who
sends messages to a bunch of people advertising something. You have no doubt
experienced spam with your email account. Annoying isn't it? The reason free
dating sites are especially susceptible is because they are free. It is easy
for someone to join and then send a bunch of messages. Some people go so far as
to create a custom script or computer program that will automatically spam all
of a site's members. A good free dating site will have none of that. For
example, at DateHookup.com, we don't play games with spammers. We have software
that can easily tell when someone is trying to spam, and when it does, all of
their messages are deleted and their membership is revoked. However most free
dating sites do not have such robust spam blockers. This will cause you much
annoyance. Our recommendation is to cancel your membership on that site and
join a good free dating site, or join a pay site (even pay sites can be subject
to spam. It is up to the site to provide spam blocking software).
