| Anyone here have any experience with Russian women and other foreign ladies making unsolicited contact through on-line dating services? If you have, how long before she hit you up for money, and how much?
This has happened to me twice this year. The first time, the woman was from Africa. Most recently, the young woman was from Russia. From here on out, I'm sticking with the American ladies.

| A scammer has no country...so to speak. I started communicating with a guy on Match.com who said he was from Ohio ... ahhh.....but was on business in Spain. He played it fairly well for about 6 weeks before starting his scenario for a need for money.
So...the country doesn't matter...the scheme is the same.
And...it's probably true...it probably was actually a man you were communicating with. I read that scammers are more successful with men...because of the "beautiful woman" who is communicating with them...and the fact that men have an innate desire to help women in need. They also said that usually it is a man posing as a woman...and, of course, the pictures are stolen from others (fake).

| 99.99999% of all unsolicited email from anywhere - including the US - is a scam / fraud.
There's nothing wrong with Russian or any other foreign gals, but you will NOT meet them over the internet.
There are, however, tons of them in Russia.

I get ~ 5 of those per day. Yay me...
I had a truly fabulous IM conversation with one a couple of years ago, when I was bored and felt like playing with "her".
To make a very long story short, she was going to fly to Kingston to see me, and make the hot passionate sex with me so I could put my baby in her, etc etc. Unfortunately she was stuck in a hotel in Nigeria, and her travelers cheques had been stolen so she owed the hotel $500. for her stay and they wouldn't let her leave until I wired the money to her.
The conversation went on and on and on...
I told her I didn't have $500 to wire her, and asked her if she had any jewelery she could hock for some cash. She said some men had given her $250 for her necklace, so now she needed $250. Progress!
I asked her if she thought the men might pay her for certain other services. She didn't think that was a good idea - Probably a good call on her part, I suppose.
I asked her if the hotel manager was a woman... Yes. Is she hot? Yes she is attractive. Any chance of a threesome? (She was a little offended by that one - Apparently she expects me to save myself for her, despite the lord only knows how many other guys she's stringing along at the same time - Hypocracy!)
The sad thing is, people wouldn't be running these scams for a living if they didn't get a significant number of takers. It's tragic that some people are still that gullible. And possibly more tragic that our collective trust of others has fallen victim to the scam industry.
I've personally had great luck meeting interesting women via the internet - But by and large, it's a hostile and dangerous place!

There are, however, tons of them in Russia.
People have all kinds of stories about the whole mail-order bride industry... Some dude posted a "warning" (on here somewhere I think) saying he had actually flown to Russia and met his "match", but she was still working him for money at that point.
I gather some affluent North American men do go through legitimate agencies in Russia and find themselves a lovely young trophy wife, and are more or less happy with their "acquisition".
A guy who used to do some investment brokering for me contacted a friend of his who worked at the Canadian embassy in Brazil and said "Hey, find me a pretty young Brazillian gal from the secretarial pool or whatever who speaks decent english and is interested in me flying her up to Canada to meet me" - And 2 kids and 10 years or so later it seems to have worked out quite nicely for both of them.
Standard modern-day survival skill applies - Never give money to someone who comes to you with the proposition, no matter how attractive it may seem!

Sandra"
For some reason they always have tiny little stamp-sized pics, and almost always only one. The cam on their PC will never, ever work of course.
They are always orphans, and the boys in their area treat women like crap so they want to find a nice man. Their friend found love this way, so they want to see if it will work for them too.
-or-
They are American, or British (yet somehow having very poor command of English), and on a trip in Africa. I suppose it would strain their credibility with even the most gullible mark to say they are being held hostage by a hotel manager in Atlanta, and to save them you should wire the funds to an address in Nigeria.

Probably downloaded from some model/fashion site that sells bikinis.
You want a Russian girl?
No problem.
Learn at least some basic conversational Russian (which will mean at the very least a year or two of every day study) so you have at least some chance of actually understanding them when you get there.
Russia is not an 'easy' country to travel in.
Get yourself a visa and go.
No agency, no groups, no major plans, just go like on a vacation.
Limit yourself to one or two cities and plan on doing the usual sightseeing & stuff.
Be very open - and VERY wary!!! - to al possibilities and go out a lot.
Like bars, nightclubs, cafes, restaurants, maybe research some options for sports or other activities before you go, just get as involved in their local 'scene' as you can.
As a foreigner (which everybody over there will immediately know you are, even before you open your mouth), you will automatically attract attention, not all of it welcome.....
No reason why you shouldn't meet at least one real life Russian girl who may not be a scammer.
