This subject has been bothering me lately. I'm slowly getting to be against them....UNTIL I saw a security guard taser a new father WITH A BABY IN HIS ARMS in a video on T V last night...he fell with the baby in his arms hitting the babies head on the floor....security claims he was argumentative with them?

COMMENTS on the taser use lately................................

I am against it...there is just too much abuse with it...it is becoming almost as common as flashing a flashlight in your face..or asking for your license.

I think the thought process of less deadly force was and is a good one. But the issue has become one of common sence. Law enforcement is somewhat leery (as they should be) to draw and use there primary weapons due to among other things majo lawsuits that they usually lose. Which cost the citys millions and the officer his or her job. Those same lawsuits have not yet made its way through the courts on the use of tasers. You notice we did not have these issue's to this extent when they were using "stun guns" and had to be at arms lenth. I find this interresting. As for Pro or Con, I do not think it has played itself out yet and am in a wait and see mode. I do think the same requirements should be on them as any concealed weapon.

Yeh, Geep - I saw that same story. I mean there were two security guards right there next to him - all they had to do was block the elevator door and/or the stairway door and he'd have to stay there. I agree with others above, too, in that the tasers now have come to be too hastily used/abused - they, too, should be used as a "last resort" and only then when no other person would be/could be (like the baby in the guys arms) hurt...

It is like with anything else of this caliber. Common sense and training is a MUST weapon for these products. Anyone deciding to use these products needs to use common sense and training. Even though they are non-lethal, as with most anything when used in force, they CAN become a lethal weapon. I talked to one officer today who said they all now have to go through extensive training for the use of TASERS. Let's hope the others will follow their lead

I think in this case, the taser was used inappropriately, first for the fact that a baby was involved, and secondly, subject was "argumentative"(???!!!). But our police need to have and be able to use whatever force is necessary against criminals who are often better armed than the police. Key word: criminals.

Keep in mind that a Tazer is another option for "Less than LETHAL FORCE" How many options do we want to take away? Yes, there has been abuse and that is why we have a Court System. I also wonder how many times a Tazer has been used in lieu of deadly force with satsfactory results and no loss of life. 25 years in Law Enforcement here says keep em but make sure people are properly trained and understand the ramifications of mis-use.JMHO

having family in law enforcement, I come to agree with the last 2 posts who favor the tasers. yes many lives have been spared, due to their use, and used properly.Remember our law enforcement men and women, are just as valuable for our freedom, as those fighting overseas. don't let some bad apples ruen your thoughts into believing that this is being abused. IT IS NOT. one case, does not make for a cause

I think there are many really caring and good members of the law enforcement community.

As in many professions, we have some that abuse the authority they must have to enforce the law. Enforcement is a must for us.

I do not agree with the above case, but also wonder what the man did to cause the security guard to have to do something to him in the first place. Sorry for the baby, but why would a man hold an infant and proceed to argue with authority. Thinking the authority could not do anything to him. Bad decision was made, but don't you have to wonder about what caused the decision? I do! This comes under the heading of placing a child in harms way, by the mouth of the man holding the child. I doubt that we get the whole story on this.

I cannot condemn Tasers for this one case.
