| Heck, yeah!
I blew about $600 on fireworks (about half my usual budget -- money has been tight), and put on a nice show for all the kids (including mine, and some adults) where I live.
Got a lot of thanks, and others helped me clean up (my shows do a good job of littering the street, and I am very glad I invested in a push broom and large dustpan).
I am now enjoying a nice cold Guinness for my effort, as my kids are sound asleep -- dreams of booms and bangs in their heads.
I started with parachutes (ALWAYS a hit with the kids), and smoke bombs around 7:30, moved on to roman candles as it started to get dark, a couple 300 shot cakes, lots of single-break, quad-break, and 5-break shells, tons of small fountains, and then the large 120 shot, and 750 shot cakes, closing, as I always do, with a single salute.
Yeah, it's an extravagance -- might as well burn $100 bills -- but, hey, it's only once a year, and it puts a lot of smiles on a lot of people's faces.
Besides, after doing it for five years, I have a reputation to maintain.

| Mine was bitter-sweet. The boys popped fire works like they were ten again, but it was the last night I will spend with my 18 year old for awhile. I am putting him on a plane today to go 2600 miles away to college.

| Heh, den15x12: you'd be "run outta Dodge" where I live.
It isn't the 4th of July without one's own personal expression of liberty. Somehow, we (the city residents) manage to not put anything on fire, or maim anyone. Having water and sand at the ready helps.
People here who do not like fireworks, loud noises in general, or have sensitive pets know to leave for a three day weekend somewhere.
We're talking multi-burst shells, 500 to 1000 shot cakes, multiple parachutes (kids LOVE those before sunset), and very much littering the street (I am SO glad I invested in a push broom and large dust pan). I put on a show from 7:30 to midnight (when all noise has to cease -- my show ended promptly at 11:59, and then some of the spectators helped me clean up).
I understand your position, but it is but one day a year. Living in a community requires compromise. Pick the community you feel most comfortable in and move there -- one county over, they have strict anti-personal-firework bylaws.
