NCRI, collected 167,000(52% more than needed)to place the proposed constitutional amendment on the November Ballot.

The Nebraska Civil Rights Initiative proposed amendment would add Section 30 to Article One of the constitution of Nebraska. It would effectively prohibit State and Local Governments
from discriminating or granting preferential treatment to any group or individual based on race, color, ethnicity, or national origin, in the operation of public employment, public education, and public contracting.

This seems to have support from repubs, dems, and independents. It makes sense to me, to hire on qualifications. Not some predetermined race or sex, quotas.

When I was an independent contractor, I preferred to hire and work with the Mexican crews.
They were more goal oriented, than the other races available. I wouldn't want to have my hands tied by affirmative action....So, I don't want my State and Local Governments hands tied either. Any thoughts?

Quota systems rarely work. If Affirmative action was so great it would have lasted but hiring someone just because of their skin color is no more right than not hiring someone do to their skin color..jmo

Gee, what a concept.

Hiring people based on their skill and experience?

I'm sure if it gets passed it will be challenged in the courts by the crybabies.. I mean Liberals...

lol, sd. Most common sense issues in NE, are forced by petition. It seems our unicameral form of government, spends most of it's time sitting on one thumb, sucking on the other, and rotating every 5 minutes! Oh, they also wonder why our young people are leaving the state in record numbers

It's the same here even though we have legislators of both species. If you took the lawyers, insurance and real estate agents out of the State Capitol there'd be 2 janitors and several out of work hookers left.

Newlife, Sioux Falls isn't that far from Nebraska

At the time of it's institution affirmative action was neccesary to break the predjudicial cycle in place. It may be time to experiment with relaxation but care must be taken to prevent a return to the nepotism and croneyism of the past where only certain families were likely to receive govt. jobs or contracts.

I signed to get it on the ballot. Its about time.

Nebraska is starting to rock and roll!

We just finished with the Olympic swim team trials, survived a storm with up to 85 MPH winds, are becoming known as "the" place for Indy rock at Saddle Creek Records.

We are the home of Gallup Polls, the world's largest indoor tropical rain forest and the Number One Zoo in the Nation, Home of the College World Series, Warren Buffet and several people on DH!!! Our economy is thriving much better than it is on either coasts.

nocatch, i agree with your "past and present" summary of affirmative action.

someone above mentioned a "goal-oriented" work ethic of hispanic employees. i agree...my experiences have been that there is a VERY strong work ethic there, and not much whining about doing some pretty hard, physically-demanding work!

Shhhhhhh.....

Don't make it sound too good Pinkstar. I'm hoping most of the people who consider this area "flyover country" just keep right on flying over.

180 miles up I-29 we've got one of the lowest crime rates in the Nation, unemployment rate for May was 1.8%. Housing starts are _UP_ again this year and low, low tax rates......

Damn, now I'm doing it

Love the outfit BTW

one life: yes, I can see how easy that would be, LOL!

But I'd sooner be a Cornhusker than a badger.

SD: oops, I made a mistake.

People: Do not come to Nebraska. We close up shop at noon to let the cattle run through town. With the cattle comes cowpies. They stink up everything.

We recently got cable, thanks to Larry (the cable guy)....but not all of us got it.

There's nothing to do here, we work hard, and are boring...so move along, there's nothing here worth seeing.

Except for a few gang shootings in my neighborhood. Still trying to figure out if it is gunshots or leftover fireworks going off. *not kidding about that*
