| GET Qwest DSL on your phone line..$26.99 per month for alifetime, when I signed up..
works really well, and for a small increase over dial up.
Your phone line is always available for phone calls, at the same time.
Short of that.. TRY some free downloads"
crapcleaner.com
TuneUpUtilities 2008, (free for 30 days) has system optimizers..
that have worked for me since the 2006 version...worth the price for me
after I purchased 2007, and am almost to the end of a 30 day trial on 2008...)
Make sure your o/sys is up to dates with all the latest
updates. There were a lot of updates this week for Vista and XP.
Run *Spybot search and destroy*..(free)
run *Adaware* (free) they each pick up different things..
please let me know how any of these help or not...
we can think of some more things..(sounds like sypware is rampant on your system)

| Dialup is dead. Get cable, or if you're cheap, DSL. Wanting to speed up dialup internet is like trying to improve the sound quality of an 8-track or tape. It's a futile indeavor.

Not entirely true. With the right gear i.e. compressor, eq, sonic maximizer or any of the other "Tools" out there for audio restoration you can in fact clean up considerably any audio source. Even an 8 track!
At the end of the day dial up is dial up. There are allot of gimmicks out there that claim to help you speed up that sort of connection, but none of them ever had any of my clients satisfied with the improvement.
Just my 2 cents.

| Some of us cannot get cable..(I could if I wanted to pay $20,000.00 plus to bring
the line down my 3/4 mile driveway...cable would have to be underground...
no overhead lines allowed...
So, yes I guess I am cheap...I have better places to spend 20K...
when DSL will work just fine...
I know it is half the speed or less of cable..
but how far will $20,000.00 go???
How fast can I read e-mail?
Adware/spyware and trojans are most likely clogging up his
system for turning the pages...

Yeah, ditch the dial up, DSL is pretty cheap in most areas.
but yes, you could try lavasoft adaware spyware scan.
They have a free version if you look but I'd just get a faster connection speed.
The phone company will even give you a free DSL modem, when you sign up.
Before I got DSL I was going to update my netscape and it said it would take 45 minutes.
A couple weeks later I got DSL and it did it in less that 5 minutes.
You have to have DSL, I'd go mad without it.

| If you want to cut the fat. Disable flash. Turn off graphics too. You're on dialup and TODAY'S internet was designed for fast connections. Dialup=Screwed in today's world..
What I do is use FF (FireFox) without flash installed. If I need it, I copy the link into IE (Internet Explorer.) Mostly I use FF...
But if you really want surf fast, use the Google cache. When it's opening, click the link at the top right that says 'cached text.' You've got to click the cached link under the search item for that to use the cached item...

| Have you done a SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY???
Do you know your START UP programs? Can you elimate all
but the bare bones to see if that helps?
Have you done a BELARC ADVISOR for the inventory of your system programs?
Free and it gives you all the stuff that is on your machines and the
product key for each program..
Then cut the fat off and see if that helps...
You can always re-install stuff after you do the evaluation.

No the slow up is not from dial-up thats absolutely correct. The slow up is the amount of content that your dial-up has to transfer. Web pages harbor far more content than they did in years past to put this to a very simple test, go to craigslist a simple page and check the load time.
That being said 90% of web sites are no longer simple ones so obviously your dial- up is laboring to download the content from these. If you turn the content off "bad idea" or download a faster more simplistic browser, Then you may see a possible increase in speed at the sacrifice of content.

| Have you checked your phone line lately? If you're out in the country and can't get DSL because you're more than a mile or two from the local phone company equipment it is also possible that you have a low line level, noise on the line, a poor or broken ground connection, a poor line connection somewhere between your modem jack and the Netork Interface box where the line comes into your house, or a combination of these conditions. Any one of these common problems will cause your modem to automatically slow down its speed until it can communicate properly with your phone company. If you plug in a phone and hear a lot of static or hum your best bet is to call the phone company and they'll send out a technician to check out the stuff on the their side of the Network interface for free, then you'll know if it's their problem or yours. If you have their Wire Plan they'll correct the condition inside the house as well.
