| Yes, to be 22 again,
Brown and lean,
Nothing but a bikini
And a board at Sunset Beach!
Oh, life was heaven.
Nothing more needed,
Wanted, dreamed for
Than the gulls, the waves,
And a good surf.

| Summer in the lower San Joaquin,
She lays a long, hot body over
The orchards and vineyards,
Takes a short inhale of sun,
And a long, slow e x h a l e....
Her breath, a dragon's breath,
Her fingers, hot to the bone,
Ah, she lingers, lingers,
Far into the night, insomniac
Summer. She seems not to
Mind withering the grass
To autumn brown, not see
The birds fan their wings
To cool themselves at noon.
Summer drapes herself
Over the lower San Joaquin,
Her eyelids blink, and almonds
Ripen, nectarines burst and
Tomatoes litter I-5 for
Miles. You'd think they were
Red roses, until you see the
Tomato truck, and watch them
Spill over the sides. Summer
Hitches a ride north, and
Rolls the tumbleweeds like
Marbles as she goes.
Summer hums long gone tunes
As she walks barefoot through
The lower San Joaquin. She
Is a lady who takes her time,
This time we name for her,
Summertime.

| August, Queen of Summer,
We salute you! Your hands
Laden with figs, your hair
Tangled with grapevines,
Spread over your bare shoulders
Scented with mint and sage.
August, you rule your court
With a voice like a breaking wave,
With a mien so lush, men
Avert their eyes from such
Beauty, and hearts take cover
From your sunlight words.
Far into the night, you hold
Us with your warm breath
And your promise to stay
Our Queen forever,
Let each evening be as long,
Each breeze this light, let the
Smell of the ocean waft when you
Walk by your people. Hear
Them shout, Queen August,
"Queen of Summer, Long life!"
Noble and fair Queen, each
Winter I sit by the fire and
Pray I live one more summer
To salute your passing.
"God save the Queen!"
