| This was the scene this morning down the street from home.
40 emergency vehicles were dispatched. 6 firefighters taken to hospital, 3 with 2nd degree burns. All will be ok (Thank goodness!) The explosion was so big it blew a firetruck off the ground, the parking garage doors off and many cars around the parking garage. Nearby buildings had windows blown out and belongings thrown around homes. There is serious structural damage and at this point all residents are homeless. My ex lives in the white building beside in the picture. THANK GOD my son was home with me at the time and my ex is just fine. Stuck on the 25th floor with no power or water, but fine.
Unfortunately, a good friend lives in the exploded building on the 5th floor. I have not been able to contact him at this point. To the best of emergency services knowledge there are no life threatening injuries to any residents. I pray they're right. They are currently carrying seniors out of the upper floors now that it is under control and they have been able to gain access.
I know we are all many miles away and in a different country, but all of your prayers have done wonders in the past and I'm hoping they may just help today. Not only am I worried for my good friend, but the many left homeless (210 apartments worth!) by this explosion. Thanks for your time and thoughts.

| They said it was a hydro vault in the building that exploded. The fire department was called before the explosion because residents smelled smoke, it actually exploded while emergency services were there. Very scary!

| Yeah, that is scary. I will pray all are well too.
Back several years ago now I worked with a woman who lived not far from the gas pipe explosion in Edison, NJ. That one was bad too.

| Thank you so much! I'm just waiting on the news for an update as to whether they've managed to get everyone out yet. I know I won't be able to get in touch with my friend until he's out of there and even at that it may not be until tomorrow. I have half a mind to drive over there, but I'll never get near since all the streets are closed.

| A friend of mine actually lives in a building where New York Yankees pitcher Cory Liddle's private jet crashed back in November of 2006. When I heard it on the news and saw the coverage, my heart stopped. I started calling my friend to make sure he was OK, I couldn't get in touch with him for several days. I started feared the worst. But luckily, my friend was OK...He was taking a little vacation and was somewhere upstate with no reception. he didn't even know what has happened to his building until he started listening to his voicemail...

No word yet from my friend. I'm hoping that he is among the 1000 residents being taken care of by Red Cross and Salvation Army in a local school for the time being. There is an announcement expected by noon today as to whether anyone will be able to return home or the building will be a write off.
