Since I haven't been inside a beauty shop since 8th grade graduation, due to the embarrassment of having to wear that hairdo to the graduation, and since I went to beauty school for 5 months, I have no need for them, thank goodness.

But I did create a haircut from hell for myself when I was younger. I have naturally curly, frizzy, wavy, unmanageable hair, that probably was helped to be trained by my mother who always curled it around her fingers on the sides in a Shirley Temple manner or "spit curls" with bobby pins in them at the top of my forehead, which I have tried to straighten in some capacity all my life. Nowadays, the hair dryers and straighteners work wonders unless there is any heat or humidity, of course, and then they are useless.

But when I was in High School I always wanted to have straight hair, of course, the straight wanting curly and the curly wanting straight, as is the nature of life, so I bought a kit specifically designed for black people who used such, and put it on my hair. I was so excited after using it. My hair was straight! So I quickly cut those straight bangs just below my eyebrows that I had so desperately longed for all my life.

After sleeping on it and when i woke up the next morning, I fairly ran to the bathroom to look at my lovely straight hair, and it had kinked back up to the point of no return, and those lovely straight bangs were now curled in little "turd curls" as I so lovingly(NOT) always called them, at the TOP OF MY FOREHEAD!

Two hair cuts ago the girl gave me exactly what I ask for and ends up that was not what I really wanted- so bad that my friends said what happen to your head! Yeah that bad. When I went back to the same place an the same girl I made sure to tell her something different and it worked. You are not going to believe this but I can't tell you how many times I have told hairdressers to have at it do what they think would look good. They actually know better than I do so why not. Works for me! Of course I don't have a lot of hair to begin with so short is short no matter how you cut it. LOL Hair color is a whole other story.

Mine so much isn't about the cut, but coloring.

I am a natrual brunette, been coloring my hair for.............a long time. Appx 8mths ago, I decided I needed to get the color back to a more softer light brown/blonde, but I couldn't figure out to do it myself. Soooooo, I went to one of the local salons, I told her what I wanted, even pointed to the color from a picture on the wall.

When she first came at me with the first color, I thought "holy crap" thats way to dark, she assured me it only looks bad in the bottle. WRONG!!!!!!! She left that crap on almost and hour, the whole time I was pacing and questioning the fact, shouldn't this be rinsed.

Well when it finally came time to rinse, I got REAL nervous when she never turned me around so I could see it in the mirror. She proceeded to dry and style, then turned me around. "HOLY F*CK" was the only thing that came out of my mouth. I was sitting there looking at myself with DARK PURPLE hair. Damn near in tears, wasn't sure if they were from disappointment or the fact I wanted to ring her neck.

She stood there telling me it was exactly the color from the picture, by then she would have been better off not saying a word, because all I could say at that point was, BULL SHIT. I left there just a steamin, as I went about my business, I kept stopping people along the way, asking them what color was my hair, over half said they didn't know.

So the more I thought about it, the madder I got and I went back there. What it boiled down to was, I told her I would rewrite my check for half, she came back and said that was unacceptable, there is nothing wrong with your hair. Sooooo, I said fine, don't bother depositing the check because it won't be any good. Turned around and went right to the bank and stoped payment. I went home borrowed a digial camera and took picturs of my hair, just in case she decided to take me to court. Trust me, I would of surely won in court. It took me 6 months to get my hair back to the color I started with, 6 months!!!.

Atl, I know exactly where you're coming from. I've been to get my hair 'shaped' up and end up with it gone... I don't understand the language of the cosmetology at all. I mean, tell them one thing and get something totally different. I had found a girl that did a great job and gave me exactly what I wanted. She did the razor cut. Stayed with her until one day, poof, she left... Well, I let another girl cut my hair and it was terrible with a big T!!!!..... My hair was standing up so bad I looked like someone had scared the living day lights out of me....... I can laugh at it now, but at the time, no way....

yes i have a horror story, this happened about six weeks ago....i went in for a trim and she took off eighteen inches. at no time did i express any desire for eighteen inches to be hacked off, and that is what it looked like...hacked! had to go to someone else to have it layered properly so there is some more inches off, it is finally starting to look better. as it has grown out some more.

Well, I'm afraid I ask for it every time. Being adventurous and sometimes bored with my look, I've been known to go to total strangers (!) and ask them to do what you will!

You can not imagine in your wildest dreams what some of these people have done to my head. And of course, it always grows out.

My advise: don't try this at home!

Sorry to take so much time getting back, Alt. Yes, to me, if you said stacked, no matter the length presently, I would be inclined to think pretty short. But, like I said, with you just saying trimmed and then stacked I would have been puzzeled and ask more questions.

Gee, I think Ronald McDonald Red would be very, very becoming...but what do I know!!!! Ha!

Gee, Pink, it's nice to hear someone say once in a while that we hairdressers know what we do! So many times, when a client knows exactly what they want, they are really not picking what is best for their face and hair. I always tried to do exactly what they ask for but often wished I could do what would be best! We always had the old Farah Faucet(sp) example. Everyone wanted it but very few could actually do it or wear it. Many things are possible if you life with a hairdresser who can do your hair every 30 minutes. That's why pictures from magazines are often so useless. If you never go outside, many of us could have beautiful hair. I have naturally curly hair and I always say that if I never leave the bathroom my hair would always look great but mix MO humidity and the wind with my hair and I usually look like a Brillo Pad!!! Isn't that a picture???

"Brillo pad" my picture exactly, Jeannie. I am sure you are a great hairdresser.

I just could not get the lady who did my hair for 8th grade graduation to understand that I needed her to use BIG curlers in my hair because if she used little ones it would be way too tight. My mom told her to do what was best, and since she was paying for it, I didn't get a say.

My Aunt went to House Of Heavelin, which I think was on Troost (you will understand) and when I was 16 I went with her during the summer, and I picked up a lot for my own use. She has maintained a barber shop in my home town for years, and it is very hard, tedious, "on feet" all day, trying to please people who think that their hair will do exactly what that "glamour" shot in a picture will do, and I know she wishes she could!

I was working a full time job at Bendix in my 20's and going to Beauty School at night for 5 months. I learned just enough to be able to take care of my "unruly" hair myself.

But I do have great respect and admiration for barbers and beauticians.

OMG! What great stories! So nice not to be the only one! My problem is so much is gone..measured 4 1/2 inches gone today! Oh well. My hair and mind are stunned, but it'll be ok. Thing is my stylist DOES know what she's doing and I trust her. I had a great one when I lived in N.C....she was a question asker and really discussed what would look best, etc. Overall the people I've used have been great...I just mixed up my language!

Rof...that long wavy look on you is so becoming!

And claypot: when you told me that story on the phone when it happened I was quaking in my boots and glad you were no where near me!

Jeannie: remind me to call you first next time for a language lesson!

Don't try to suck up to me for something there fast!

(No positive "suggestions" are gonna make it longer!) I look like a child for crying out loud! Remember "Paper Moon"---Tatum O'Neal's character...yep that's my haircut! Kinda like my profile photo over there...ony shorter.

Atl...the very worst haircut I ever recieved, was from my Grandfather..he was a barber..and when I was six or seven, and had my first real haircut, I sat in his barber chair..and came out with a bowl haircut, above my ears..and bangs, I swear they were only an inch from my hairline. What saved me from future haircuts at the barbershop...my parents were sick over it...and the law was put down...cut the boys hair, but leave the girls alone.
