We have seen them, and some have drooled over the fast access and write times.

But ultimately is it the next step in storage evolution? Cost effectiveness per GB is still ruled by sata and pata drives. With the current bottle neck for solid state being the sata 2.0 interface itself.

What can we really hope to expect gain by investing in solid state drives "for home use" now, as opposed to 5-10 years when prices are competitive and the interface itself is capable of reaching the true transfer rates that solid state drives offer?

Just tossing this in for open debate .

I'm using a 2G SD card in a SD/ATA card now on my server. Since most of the time the IP routing and firewall run from RAM anyway is saves a lot of energy when it updates the log files since it doesn't have to spin up a hard drive.

In the next few years probably bridging to NVRAM drives, maybe with a smaller NVRAM drive accessing most commonly used files and an rotating drive for bulk storage eventually evolving to a pure solid state device possibly directly on the main RAM bus and similar psychical form as current DIMMs.

Who knows? 10 years ago if someone had told me I'd have a computer that cost less than $1k sitting on my desk with 4 processors running at multi Ghz speed with multi GB of RAM and a Terabyte of storage I would have laughed at them.

Looks like SATA 2.0 isn't a limiting factor on the drives yet..

Have you got a source? The RaptorX looks better to me right now.. When the Micron RealSSD C200 comes out.. It should be a force to be reckoned with.
