Okay i know i'm alittle young to be thinking like this, lol but, I just think that music was alot better in the past, especially the the 90's (music's golden age). Music today is too commercialized and bussiness-like, i think the companies today are just focused on what sells instead of quality.
Hip-Hop today has become especially too commerialized.
What ever happened to the HipHop underground days back in the 90's when it was really raw?
I used to think that Snoop Dogg and Eminem were the last good rappers left.
Now Eminem came out with this new album that sounds more like pop in my opinion.
And as you know, Snoop Dogg just did a country album a while ago.
Let me repeat that, SNOOP DOGG DID A COUNTRY ALBUM!!!!
I don't listen to much rock or pop, but i have friends who do and they think the same thing is happening with rock and pop as well. What's your opinion?
Do you think music today has this problem?

Your right rap is the worse about it for every name brand they mention they get paid for it but if you listen to the words that whats its all about getting paid. you go back to 80's early 90's to mid 90's you wouldnt here them name alot of name brands mentioned if at all as for rock its not as bad but pop is just as bad as rap and hip-hop

Just my take, Years ago (in the 60's & 70's) there was a freedom of expression that will never be again.

They made a mold for these sounds, Motown, California Ballads, Manhattan sound...

Three beat melodies, Jazzy sounds, Then the take over of raw blues and jazz into "Rock~n~Roll"

People like Chuck Barry, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin....

These were new sounds and did not fit the "Mold" so to speak........

This led to Haight Ashbury, Monterrey and Woodstock.....

Many young and creative artist, such as these, still exist, However, as you have said,

The Record companies have decided what WE should hear and what to PUSH....

Thus taking out the freedom of expression and creativity from ALL forms of music...

What used to be raw country, is now called bluegrass, But not even close to the original..

What used to be pop, is now considered country, Rap is now the old R & B

Music is the UNIVERSAL language of all nations,, Yet we no longer communicate...

All though, I am seeing a European Movement with some originality, Most music is commercialized...

As is anything we see, feel and touch now days.....

Here is a song being made familiar......

BTW - Thank you for the thread,, Good Point for such a Young Man

Hey Missypoo, I believe what he is saying is that the record companies have commercialized music.

All categories NOW come in neatly wrapped packages for all the radio stations and distributors..

Freedom of expression and originality are gone....

You said that music from the past, especially the 90's,is good.Well, check out the music from the 60's and 70's.In the 60's,band's like the Beatles, would put out 2 or 3 albums a year.Nowaday's,it's more like 1 album every 2 year's or so.This older music is widely available, thank's to the net.It must be good, considering how many band's sample it today.

Yeah, my Dad also loves music from the 60's and 70's, stuff like "The Tempations", James Brown, Earth wind and Fire", stuff like that. He has me listening to some of that stuff and i still like it too even though it's alittle before my time , GOOD music never becomes "old", it's ageless.

If what you are listening to isnt doing it for you then maybe its time to explore other avenues. Im sure there is something out there that will strike that magic chord in your soul...which is where music lives.
Im really not into the rap and the hip hop, more into straight forward rock & Roll but I lived without music for a good many years(dont ask)and it wasnt until a couple of years ago that I did begin to listen again and I liked what I as hearing...especially the 90's rock genre. I liked what these guys were doing, They were coming up with 5 string basses and 7 string guitars and got heavily into downtuning and alternative tunings and lower ranged vocals all in very innovated styles to create totally new sounds and I like it.

I keep hearing folks saying this era or that era of music is the best . I gotta disagree . Each era and every single era had its greats . 60s had the british invasion , 70s had the freedom movement , 80s had the har bands that bridged the heavy metal and soft ballad rock , 90s had the attempt at shock music .
But I do have to agree that todays music in general has become to commercialized . I have a couple of good buds that work at one of our radio stations , and they are always talking about how the producers and companies are sending just singles to the station . And how many of the listeners are asking for more songs off an album to get a real feel for the album before they go out and drop $20-$30 on it .
I also think that the commersialazation of music started back in the early to mid 90s . When they started to put warning labels on the albums , those same labels got printed onto t-shirts . T-shirts started to be sold at concerts for twice as much as you could buy that same shirt at a record store . The companies are making a killing by making an album "out of print" . I myself have about a dozen cassette tapes that you can not find on disc . Then 15 or 20 years later , it reraleased with "2 new , never before heard songs" . And folks drop $60 for 2 songs on and album they already have .

Sorry folks , I didn't mean to make this post so long and ranting . Music is just something I love .
