I just found out my dog, Mocha, has lymphoma cancer. Without chemo she will live for 3-6 months. With chemo, it will only prolong it and she will have maybe a year to live. I really don't want to see her suffer and right now she doesn't act like there is anything wrong with her. What would you do? Would you put her down right away so she won't suffer or would you wait until she is showing signs of the cancer before putting her down?

I would just let her continue to be happy until the cancer starts affecting her. Then I would put her down...She will let you know when she is in pain.

I'm so sorry to here about your dog M. Dogs are part of the family. This is a really hard decision that you have to make.

If I was in your position I would probably hold on to the dog as long as I could. At the first sign of the dog suffering that's when I would have it put down.

Easier said then done though. Sorry to hear about your dog

I am so sorry, my dogs are my children. I would say to let her stay with you as long as she is happy and healthy, but when she started to begin showing signs of pain, then I would euthanize her. But that is tough decision for you. My baby is getting old and doesnt feel good sometimes, I have had him since he was a puppy when I was sixteen. I will be brokenhearted without him but I cant bear to see him in pain.

I too have a situation with my poodle who happens to be blind, diabetic and is very weak. I asked for an opinion if I should allow this to continue or put him down to rest.......This is a response I received........only YOU know from your heart when you should or shouldn't put your sweet pet down without outside interference in order to avoid 'regrets' or 'resentments'. Follow your heart, hon.

What a coincidence. My dog got diagnosed with Bladder Cancer 3 months ago. I was faced with the same thing. I decided that she could now eat anything she wants because lets face it...what is she going to do...die? She gets to be taken on walks. She can now sleep on the bed. Just about any damn thing she wants. She has lived 12 years and that is a good dog life. I say keep her around and spoil her rotten.

Lin, when I am old and sick, I wanna live with YOU!!! LOL But really, isn't that what we all want, to be loved and cared for as best we can be, and when it's time, to be peacefully taken home?

I'm so sorry about your dog, passerby!

How much time the animals have left to live are always just guesses. In 2001, my dog was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer. I was told he had about a month to live without chemo, and maybe three months with chemo. He died 3 days later.

In 2001, I was told between $300-500 per month.
No idea if it's gone up (inflation) or down (patent expiration/ available generics).

Thanks guys. I am going to spoil her rotten. Mocha and my son have been my rock when I really needed it right after my husband passed away. Now it's time for me to get ready for another passing. Atleast I will be able to say goodbye in my own way and love her before she goes. My son wrote on a helium balloon for his dad and told him that we love him and miss him. He also said that there is going to be a really good dog sent his way that he needs to take care of. Of course I started crying but he seems to be handling it better than me.

I took Mocha to 2 different vets. Chemo will cost anywhere from $1000 to $3000 and it will only prolong it for a year.

Give the dog peace and let it be happy and content. That's all I got good luck.

Im so sorry about your dog passerby. I had to put my cat down when she was 16 yrs old I knew she was in pain and I had her euthanized it was a sad thing and I cried but I couldnt see her in pain either, so keep your dog as long as you can spoil him/her as much as you can til the end. GL

Sorry to hear about your dog Passer. IMHO, you are doing the best for him by making him as comfortable and happy as possible while he is still here. The chemo does neither of those things.
