I have never been to the State Fair.
Is it moving there as of next year?

I went for the first time last year. Met a nice gentleman (from this site actually- ahem!) and enjoyed myself tremendously! Have you ever been to your county fair? It's a lot like that only much bigger. Animals, rides, buildings with crafts, vegetables, etc. I saw a 1,000+ pound pumpkin and quilts to die for. Oh, were they beautiful! The state winners, of course.

For those that don't follow NASCAR, the group that owns Richmond International Raceway bought the fairgrounds several years ago. The state fair gets to use the fairgrounds until they get a new facility up and running. Both parties should end up with a better situation once everything planned gets built.

I believe the state fair will loose a lot of it's former customers. I really doubt it if I will ever drive up past Kings Dominion Into Caroline County just to Visit the state fair. The last time I went through there it was only a two lane road.

As far as security goes - In my opinion you will be less safe. As it stands currently Henrico Police and Fire provide security and medical coverage for the state fair. While the fair is located in Henrico County and you get hurt you stand a better chance of survival getting to a hospital as fast as you can. Med flight will cost you $10,000.00 for a ride....Payable to the State of Virginia, no refunds, and they will get there money.

When the State fair moves to Caroline County, the sheriff's dept will be the head of security, and the Va State police will assist Caroline County's sheriffs deputy's.
I would imagine the volunteer rescue squads in the area will assist in providing the medical attention to the Fair's patrons. What is the nearest medical facility / hospital ? Well, they are all back in Richmond.

How thin will the sheriff's dept. be on man power when the state fair is in operation ? Caroline county has to pay it's personal for the services rendered just like Henrico county does. However Henrico county has a much larger police force than Caroline county's Sheriffs office does. Which means Caroline County's deputies will be working longer and harder hours, and still maintain coverage for the rest of the county while the fair is in town.....

Now I just do not see how you think you will be in a safer location, Knowing that the bad guys now have cars and can drive to the same areas where crowds of people congregate in a small area, with limited police police protection.......

Please explain how you will feel safer...I will be safer as I will be watching it on the news

If you have spent this much time thinking about the horrific dangers of going to the state fair it might be better if you stay in the house and never come out again.

LMAO Jen, good response.

Chicky, the old fairground, now RIR, is my old backyard, what are you trying to say about being dangerous? Oh, yeah, I remember now!

I still live close to RIR, and haven't been to the fair in years, not for safety or any other reasons than it didn't interest me. So the move won't affect me.

I do think that with it in Caroline Co it might be close enough for more people from NOVA to attend.

I also believe the closest hospital would be Mary Washington, in Fredericksburg, not Richmond, but I have not checked the exact milage.
