I look at profiles every now-and-then and read the descriptions. Of course, the profiles I look at are of girls roughly my age. I have seen so much misspellings and lack of punctuation.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind it...to an extent. But when I'm reading descriptions of people that contain a whole lot of things like...

ur
im

and no punctuation or capitalization to show a new sentence, it becomes very tiring.

I don't know about anyone else, but it is very unattractive for me.

There are people 20, 30, and even 40 that do this. They do it because they are allowed to do it. And more often than not they are encouraged to do it by a society that no longer feels the need to excel. Too bad.

For some reason it doesn't bother me. When people type lyk dis I actually like reading it. haha. As far as me personally I typo from typing so fast and I figure no point spellchecking for strangers, but I try to spellcheck SOME. As far as grammar I usually notice when I could use better grammar and again I get too lazy to change it sometimes. Technically that sentence may not be grammatically correct.

There are a couple mistakes people make which do bug me though. When someone says something was bigger "then" something else instead of using the word than! And the whole there/their thing.

It's not the 1950's! Growing up, we were in school from 8:30 to 4:30 five days a week. Compare that to the
hours in school per day now! By 6th grade, we were diagramming compound/complex sentences. By 8th
grade, we had one hour of grammar and one hour of literature a day. Not today's public schools! Also, modern
devices like computers and cell phones encourage truncated and sloppy language. It's sad, because words are
how we connect with others. I found it easy to learn other languages because of a good grounding in English,
as well... easier than younger folks who have not had lessons in syntax and grammar. As for spelling, well,
not my strong point, so always keep a dictionary in the bedroom! I called my old grade school, Grants Lick Elementary in Grants Lick, Kentucky, and thanked them for giving me the gift of my own language, this wonderful
English language.

I have it plainly stated in my profile that if you cannot spell, I'm not interested. It's one of my biggest pet peeves and will probably drive me nuts until the day I die. I don't think people realize that the inability to spell makes them look unintelligent all around, and that isn't always the case. I don't understand why people can't spell on the internet... I mean, we have spell check available on everything!! Use it!

I purposely dumb down my posts.I try to write at the reading level of the newspaper.

I realize everyone has different levels of comprehension.
And for some english may even be a second language.

It is advertised as an International site.
So I take that in consideration.
But I do see lots of jibber jabber too.
I mean some people go overboard and need to simplify their posts.

Speaking of "proper English"... wouldn't that be "it is very unattractive to me", or... "I find it very unattractive"?? It's definitely not "unattractive for me".

Just sayin...

My children are learning proper English (one has 2 different Language Arts classes a day) and their grammar is more than decent.

When they are texting or chatting online, it's a whole other animal LOL.

I tried to use one of their phones the other day to send a quick text to another child, but it was set on some texting shorthand thing and I could not understand any of it LOL. I had to hand the phone back and let my child do the text message. I thought I knew most abbreviations.

I do not read posts or emails that type lYk diZ 2 n 4 kinda crap LOL.

In "Proper English" there is no reason to pluralize the word 'misspellings'in the context of the sentence you are using it in,since you used the singular tense on the phrase 'lack of punctuation'. In any case, the word 'much' already denotes that you have "more than one"........ in "Proper English"! 'Now and then is not hyphenated!

I find it extremely unattractive as it reflects a lack of need/want/desire towards education.

OP: I have seen so much misspellings and lack of punctuation.

If you are going to down someone else then you need to work on your own proper language skills.

I believe the proper translation here would be:

I have seen so many misspellings and lack of punctuation.

I do agree that the texting and computer worlds have pretty much torn the spelling system up.

I give up.....

why?

Quite frankly..... those that choose not to communicate in a clear and concise manner, or prefer to use abreviations are welcome to them.

I type how I speak....I come from a different country...and was taught to use the foundational english, that your predecessors chose to bastardise.

So put the u back into the word colour....get rid of the z in anything that is supposed to have an s...

and you and I shall talk....until such time as that occurs....

take a look in the mirror, buddy.

If someone doesn't use proper English when they type, I had to hear how they speak. JMO and yes it bothers me. Do NOT say, would you like to meat? If you do not know the difference between meet and meat, nope I sure don't. Or, if there is some subliminal message there, I sure don't also.

Come on now everyone, really if we make a mistake is it the end of the world. I myself have a very hard time with spelling and forming a proper sentence. Does that mean that I should be shunned by everyone?

Not all of us had the advantages of a higher education, does that make me a lesser pick, or to be classified as undesirable. I already have too many things against me.

And YES I have had people that tore me down over a missed spelled word and I was embarrassed and belittled. It was not nice!!!!!!!!!

DG, a couple things . . .

1. Your posts are well thought out and put together in a very understandable manner. A misspelled word is one thing, but your far from a disturbing chronic case.

2. I disagree with your thinking on "advantages of a higher education". Everyone has the ability to search and reach out for more than is given to them . . . it's called inner drive.

I have seen this kind of lazy slop from those that range clear into their 40s on here, and yes, find it as unattractive (much nicer term than I would have chosen LOL) as you do. It shows laziness, ignorance, lack of self esteem or any shred of pride. When I read through garbage like that, no matter what the words were intended to read as, all I see is "I am a lazy moron who really doesn't care what you think, just trying to fill space and go looking for a booty call." The posts that are nothing but that slop, I just skim past. They just aren't worth reading. A person that would post that slop, no one I would probably care to associate with. When they talk like that, embarrassing to be seen with them in public, and annoying to listen to any time. Anyone who uses the word "aks" instead of "ask", I don't even want to talk to that muck mouth because it gives me such a headache. Just to make sure my kid doesn't grow up sounding like a moron, she isn't allowed to use that slang, or even abbreviate when she texts. Screw that it isn't 1950! I am an actual parent, who cares what my kid becomes, so I set the appropriate standards. Even back when I was in school, it was my MOTHER, not the school, who set our standards, and even for back then, they were higher than the average, BECAUSE SHE CARED WHAT WE BECAME. Just makes me want to scream every time some pinhead wants to use "these days", "their friends"...as any kind of excuse.

Must say, sure was interesting to see how many people just posted to over react on this one. I thought you were complaining about stuff like "Why r u ppl , so pissed of wit it meynnnnnnn! nuffin rong wit it god! u need to get a life innit and stop moanin man!!! i dnt have 2 rite shit to please u ppl meynnnnnnnnnn! DEAL WIT IT INNIT!!!!!" (Thanks for the handy example spider LOL) not a few simple mistakes in spelling LOL Some sure do like to make mountains out of mole hills, to which I ask, "defensive much?"

dghorn "Come on now everyone, really if we make a mistake is it the end of the world. I myself have a very hard time with spelling and forming a proper sentence. Does that mean that I should be shunned by everyone?

Reading through this thread alone, not hard to see that some anal retentive types would be so petty as to jump over something so minor, but like I said, I don't think the OP was being THAT picky. Look to spider's post for an example of what I thought he was referring to. THAT slop is completely over the top, and shows they just don't care whether anyone reads it or not, which makes me wonder why they bother to post at all Personally, I couldn't care less if you have a college degree, and some of them, I consider cause to look DOWN on someone for having chosen certain professions. Common sense is worth a hell of a lot more than a college degree when it comes to the real world.

caky "Curious . . . do you talk to your employer like that ?"
If its a pimp or a dealer, probably, since they sound the same.

I do agree that life with out forward motion is not really living so be more today then you were yesterday. I wish, I really do, that I could have had the opportunities that my kids are getting. They will and maybe already are far more advanced then I am when it comes to grammar.

About then, if mine is still in attendance, you would see me on my way BACK up to the district office AGAIN, same as when the teacher was sexually harrassing the girls in his class, to PROTEST (lost his job). Told them off when the hispanic club teacher was passing out Anti American pro Illegal propaganda (lost her job). Told them off when a teacher was assaulting first graders (lost her job). Took the principal himself to court for what he was pulling (lost his job). Yeah, they kinda know me pretty well by now LOL And that I will even go to the media, again hehehehe

I do it to feel freedom of speech. The end of last year and the beginning of this year, I felt very trapped. Writing professional at all times kind of got to me. Without going into detail, all of my copy was to be error free. In addition, my spoken words were to be error free at all times.

Have you ever had that feeling that once you break free from something, you will run as far as you can away from it? I know it sounds odd, but I felt this. Since I cannot buck my superiors, this was/is a way for me to feel freedom.

In certain areas of our lives, we feel like we do not have an ounce of control. This is my way of taking control, since I am on "my time clock" instead of underneath someone's thumbnail.

On here, I get slammed for writing with expression. Normally, someone would get offended if the following comments were posted for everyone to see: "you are not a Sweet Valley High teenager anymore but a 30 year old" or "you really are dumb as bricks." However, in my case, it makes me feel more freedom, because I am on my own time which means I am the boss.

Is this just a young person thing?

It's because people are uneducated and lazy, that's why.

Speaking of "proper English"... wouldn't that be "it is very unattractive to me", or... "I find it very unattractive"?? It's definitely not "unattractive for me".

Just sayin...

Good point! I'm not perfect, but at least I try. It's better than short hand.

Come on OP, it would seem that you feel like you're on a higher level than us mere mortals who occasionally misspell a word.

Take that suit off and loosen up a bit, we're here for fun and socializing---not grading papers......

I do know some people that excel in math who can't spell a lick...
I've typed for engineers that needed deciphering to figure out what they were saying.....

Take a chill pill dude.....

Believe me when I say I'm not THAT picky. It's just the fact that people don't even try when they write posts like that. I'm fine with a few misspelled words because hey, it happens.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Working for the govt, made me be as politically incorrect as possible on my own time LOL When my supervisor told me that I couldn't even refer to myself as a peewee I couldn't help poking the snake with a stick, and responded with, "Well, how about runt? midget? pint sized? nub? stubby?..." Every one I could think of, to each she responded NO, as her face just got sooo red hehehehehe My daughter and I have both decided we are "fun sized" LOL

Just wondering, does anyone else remember when we used to say, "Can't say 'ain't' cuz 'ain't' ain't in the dictionary"? Now, it is LOL Lots of other slang is also in there now.

The ones that bother me the most are then/than errors, there/their/they're errors, and spelling independent independant. Quick or cute abbreviations are different and are okay if there are just a few. My college papers would come back with so many red marks... noboby's perfect.

I'am more interested in what a person has to say than I am in whether or not they spelled ever word correctly. For example young man you spelled every word correctly, however you didn't really have any thing to say. This is the forum about Relationships, not a spelling Bee. So stop trying to insult people on the down low. By the way heres a word for you SNOB. Did I spell that correctly ?

This is the kind of mentality that is pretty sad.
It's mentally challenged people like this that somehow think that because you learned English in school, that that's one of the only places to use it.
People like this don't realize that you're graded on your English, which is a reflection of your intelligence and how smart you are, no matter where you are. It would ESPECIALLY be important on a dating website.

In your heading, you dont even use proper English. DId you come here to grade people or date people?

The topic? What's wrong with it?

Then you'll find someone just right for you...

Again, you are yet another person that "doesn't get it".

So stop trying to insult people on the down low.

Get an education and he won't be insulting you.

By the way heres a word for you SNOB. Did I spell that correctly ?

Sorry, was that supposed to be witty or something?

I agree, it is very unattractive. By no means am I amazing at spelling or grammar, however I at least try to make an effort.

The thing that irritates me the most is NO periods. I can get over obvious typos but when your description on your profile is riddled with horrible misspellings and grammar mistakes, no thank you. I would rather not take the time to figure out your cryptic message.

It has nothing to do with "relaxing". It's pure laziness, take the extra five seconds to make yourself sound educated and worth dating.

This is actually an interesting post because so many people feel so different about it. I didn't think that would happen.

I tutor English as a second language, so I tend to notice it more. It does annoy me a little when I see the mistakes. I do realize there are typos, but I think it's important on here to not make too many mistakes. Most people see it as a reflection on who you are in here, since there is so little else to go by.
