I posted this in entertainment as well, but since it overlaps...

Ok, so last week, as I said in another post (in Entertainment), my friends and I went to see The Golden Compass. Then we got to discussing it afterwards at dinner. The subject came up about how Narnia is supposed to be the story of Jesus, and The Golden Compass is supposed to be the antithesis of the Bible.

So my question was, "Who gives a shit?!?" I don't look to Hollyweird for life truths; I look to it for entertainment. So why do people boycott a certain movie because they perceive that it goes against their religious beliefs? Is it because they really are not that strong in their faith that they're afraid a mere film is going to make them convert?

Does anyone else have an opinion on this subject?

I enjoyed both the movies, Narnia and The Golden Compass. They were very entertaining, a good escape, plus stirred my imagination.

To fully answer the question "Why do people boycott a certain movie because they perceive that it goes against their religious beliefs?", we really have to understand the religion that the objector is and why the person might want to boycott it.

Since the religion in question is Christianty, there are several key factors. I know the term Christian is pretty broad these days, but I'll be using it in the context of most baptist, evangelical, catholic, etc. Christians believe that you are going to go to hell for eternity if you don't believe and follow their teachings. That being said, boycotting is another attempt to bring their cause into some public forum and another way to tell you that you're a sinner, since only sinner go to watch blasphmous movies.

Since the book was written by someone with open contempt for the Bible and its teachings, merely viewing the movie is granting a certain amount of royalties to a group or person that is teaching an opposite message. (When was the last time a politican contributed money to his rival's campaign?)

My opinion is right on with yours, however. I go to movies to be entertained, not to have my world perspective shaped by someone in a director's chair.

Its as simple and as complex as this: If there is anything that could possibly offend someone, somewhere and at sometime, there will be people throwing up their arms and screaming for reform.

kelly, I agree...I enjoyed both movies immensely.

And vlaric, I do agree that there are people out there like that, but I think it would be folly to either say or imply that ALL Christians are like that. That being said, I didn't mean to imply that by what I said. In fact, being pagan, I happen to know there are also pagan "fundamentalists" out there who attack people verbally just because they don't agree religiously.

But yeah, I see your point about not giving money to the other camp.

With so called reforms we lose more of our freedoms. I agree that they are extremists in every belief system. Scarey people. I go to movies for an escape from reality.

Yeah, pirate, I didn't mean to imply that all Christians are like that either. Sorry, if it sounded that way.
I don't mean to be disrespecful to anyone or any group of people.

There are many ways the fundamentalists try to impose their beliefs upon others...

We gots the muslim taliban and we gots the "christian taliban" types...

Movies are a medium that can be used in many ways.

If education is entertaining, it is more effective.

If you don't understand what a medium is expressing or you do not like it,

then there are other things to do.

A boycott is just a form or imposing upon another, which reflects

upon those boycotting as narrow minded and intolerant.

Meaning of Life (didn't find the whole movie funny, but I loved the "Live organ donors" as well as "Every Sperm is Sacred").

Oh now you did it. Now I have to go see the movie. I'm sure I will delight in it and see no connection what so ever to evil against anyone or anything. I'll have to let you know how it goes. I did love Narnia though Awesome.

Star...may want to read my post on it in Entertainment before you go...it's not for little ones. It does contain somewhat graphic violence, along the same lines as the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Just FYI

Has anyone here ever watched the movie, Powder? It is a wonderful movie about a teenager who was considered a freak, because he was more highly evolved than present humans.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Monty Python flicks too and science fiction, fantasies, magical tales.

Pirate, you will love the movie! To me, the Powder persona, is a wonderful portrayal of future possibilities of our human evolution.
