When dating in the "real" world, face to face, how long do you think it takes to really get to know someone in terms of their character. Another way to put it is, how long does it typically take you to feel satisfied that a person is who he/she says they are and portray's themslves to be?

to me you will always learn new things about your partner simple do they hold alot in and want revil it until 20 years down the road. but you will learn alot by watching there pattern of style because everyone sticks to a pattern and once you see it you will already know them by then.

Every time I see this thread title, it reminds me of the scene in "Grease" where they're discussing how it only takes 15 minutes.

Sometimes it doesn't even take a date for me to figure out a person's character. A few emails, talking over the phone etc... sometimes give a decent vibe about a person albeit good or bad.

As far as the date, I can pretty much get a gauge within the first 10-30 minutes.

i can tell what a person is really like in under ten minutes. i honestly don't know why so many other people can be surprised after knowing for someone for more than a week. learn to read body language people

when you spend as much time sitting alone in a corner as i do, you have northing better to do than watch people and learn to read them. but it really isn't that hard.

Interesting comments so far.

It seems most people feel they can judge someone's character within a first date, or within less than an hour, even.

I'm a little torn on this one. On one hand, I agree that there are people that you get a sense of immediately, especially when you're sensing that they are just wrong for you for whatever reason. Sometimes it's just blatantly obvious that a person isn't sincere, is disingenuous, or is sketchy and then the solution is simple...lol.

On the other hand, I think that people are usually on their best behavior on a first date, or in the beginning of a budding romance, therefore, their true colors aren't always so obvious from the start.

Any thoughts?

I was married 15 years after dating him 4....thought I "knew" him
dated finace for 2 years before agreeing to marry - lived with him 1.5 years before he hit me for the first time thought I "knew" him

Now....I have NO clue if you ever really "know" someone

but then when I consider how different I am than I was 10 years ago, I realize it's not about "knowing" it's about growing...

You have to evolve together
and love unconditionally

? I think?

It's hard to tell... when they start opening up, it usually doesn't take long after that to really get to know them... plus the more time you spend with them helps to get to know them...
