I am the database administrator where I work. Tomorrow, I go before the powers-that-be on my job, at their request. It is my opportunity, as one of those in the trenches, to actually show them how what I do on a daily basis affects them - and makes their lives (and cushy jobs) easier.

(Trying very hard to keep the bitter tone from this post, LOL!)

If you have a story to share here about challenges you've faced on your job with those who could actually affect your employment, I'd be interested to read them here. Did it go well...or did it backfire?

(Cringing...)

Wow! You go girl. Show them just how good your are!

And yes I just finished a project that stressed me to the max because of the powers that be. I know that you will handle it better than I did. I lost my cool and told them what I thoughtin a very professional manner. Got the project completed. And I am still working there. And actually I think I get a little more respect because I did take my stand.

I have to say, that no matter how angry or stressed you get, stay professional. You'll come out on top.

I wish you the best!

I used to do database development and database administration. I can certainly relate to the stresses and frustrations. What have you been told about the purpose of the meeting?

Now, I have no complaints. I work for a fantastic company as a Project Engineer and love what I do. It's challenging and sometimes overwhelming, but I have a very supportive supervisor. I still build and maintain my own databases in Access to do things our other systems do not.

I just wanted to touch bases to see how your meeting went? (I know I'm sending this early, but I'm guessing you won't read it until you get home from work.)

The purpose of the meeting - at least what I've been told - is to discover what the needs of different departments are as far as tracking attendance and involvement is concerned. I guess I should clarify that I work for a large church with many different ministries (departments) and 20 pastors, and it has been a major problem to make each work with the other.

Honeynubbin, if you work for a professional organization with a lot of revenue, you'll do great. I can tell by the way you write and your sweet smile.

If you work for a cheap organization, there's no telling who will be jealous of you.

By the way you write, I think you work for a good company, and I think you'll pass with flying colors. Let us know how it turns out for you. Good luck, but I don't think you'll need it.

TY for the responses! The meeting went very well and I was well-received. I finally got through to the powers-that-be about the need for unified training and technique with regard to how information is entered and updated within the system.

Skeptikos, thanks for your kind words. It is a large company (a "mega-church"). The meeting was with the top-level pastors. The senior pastor, as I suspected, didn't know me from Adam, even though we pass each other daily in the offices, and I give him my respectful hello's and good morning's, etc. He initially thought I was there yesterday for a job interview (I've been here for 3 years).

Crafty, I'll just say that I am pleased with the outcome and that I was able to finally get them to understand the need for a change in thinking regarding the company as a whole, instead of the mentality of "my department, my kingdom - I'll do things like I want to."

Whew! Now, on to the next thing on the agenda. We meet again in two weeks.

Honeynubbin,
Before retiring, I was in a similar situation. I found role playing extremely useful. Example: If I were in that position, what information would I need to do my job effectively and efficiently? It always impresses when they ask a question and you have already anticipated the need. Besides, it's fun! I taught my kids to study for tests in school that way. Develop the test that you would write, were you teaching the class, then answer all the questions. You find that your tests are usually harder than the one the teacher gives.
Anyway, don't fret, pray! A lot less stress and far more success! Keep on keepin' on.
