Used to have a ton of them. About 50 in one habitat. The things will eat just about anything, even read a story about how they were on a cargo ship and ruined all the champage they were carrying by eating the corks off the bottles. The gross thing is that they actually prefer their food slightly rotted. Fun thing is freaking out the neighbors by going over with 20 crabs hanging from your shirt LOL
Not sure how long they live, my roommate killed mine while I was out of town.

Hey Pandora, My parents had two of them and like someone said they do change homes periodicly so I suggest the bigger they get the bigger the shell. My parets said they didn,t need much attention. Hope to here from you ,Dave
