I only ask this because I have seen reference to it in several posts and I am curious..

How many people have been the victim of sexual abuse as a child? Was it at the hands of a relative or trusted friend? Have you gotten some type of help to deal with the emotional problems?

I know some of you already and thanks for sharing with me.

Yeah ... Aniceguy, I think your motives here are perfectly innocent and intended to be helpful, but I don't think it's a good idea for anyone to discuss things like this over the internet. You just don't know everyone that you're talking to.

Like I said I only ask because I have seen it in several posts lately and I know that I grew up in "Mayberry" where things like that did not happen. I am just trying to get an idea of how many people it has happened to, or if the few that I have talked to are the exceptions. I would never want to embarrass anyone or expect anyone that is not ready to talk about it to do so here.

Sweetie, I love your idealism and I wish more people shared it, but I have to dispel some of it for you - it *was* happening in the Mayberry where you grew up. No one was talking about it.

It's extremely prevalent, and it's not just prevalent in women. I've known several men who have opened up enough to share their experiences with it. In my experience men tend to admit to being victimized this way far less, or if they were in their puberty/teen years, they try to play it off as "cool, I was initiated by an older woman."

I think the reason it seems to be disproportionately publicized right now is that, not only are current victims finally finding a safe venue to speak out, but all the victims from the prior generations whose families hushed it up are also coming forward and trying to find justice and/or closure.

There are also, unfortunately, women who are taking advantage of it to gain sympathy or to explain away their own lousy behavior, when they were not actually victims. I would cheerfully move them all to a deserted island far from the rest of us if I could.

Anyhoo - the reason I said that it's not probably a good idea to talk about it here is that victims of sexual crimes (especially young ones) are VERY likely to be victimized again later in life by sexual predators, because they have a weakness in that area that is easily recognizeable to a predator.
