| The US shot down a defective NRO satellite last night.
It was quite a technical feat.
The satellite, loaded with highly toxic hydrazine fuel, was intercepted by missile at about 133 miles up, and 450 miles down-range from the missile launch.
The closing speed was 22,000 mph.
The stated goal was to blow up the hydrazine tank and burn up the fuel, and to shatter the satellite itself, to reduce chances of large parts hitting the earth. The not-so-stated goal was to test out US anti-missile technology, following China's successful satellite kill last year.
Either way, it was an incredible feat. Well done, Navy!

| It seems it would be easy to build in a fail safe self destruct mechanism. But then if someone figured out how to activate it they could cause alot of problems.

| I think it was a show for other counties to witness. Otherwise they would of done it with no press release.

| they put on a show then the next country puts on a bigger show then the next until oh oh
is this the satellite i heard of that they were afraid was going to crashdown recently? if so, i don't think it was a show i think it was something they had to do before the thing cause serious damage below. unfortunately with all the garbage satellites up there its just a matter of time before they do cause serious damage somewhere.
