| Gemini,
It can take a while when you consider you have the Mass, the burial and then the wake but it shouldn't take all day.
During the funeral Mass the Priest will start, they will have the readings and the Gospel, then people will give ulogies, the Eucharist and then the final blessing. Once that is done everyone drives over to the cemetary and they do the burial. Then the wake which can be as long as you like. Some go on for hours and some only for a short time.
***Whatever you do, DO NOT take communion. Either stay seated or if you want to receive a blessing then cross your arms over your heart and the Priest will make a Sign of the Cross on your forehead.
It is a very beautiful and peaceful service, don't worry, just go there and pay your final respects.
This can vary slightly from Diocese to Diocese around the country based on local customs but that is generally what happens.
Be prepared to pray a lot in Mass. It is one continuos prayer and is quite beautiful.

| The alcohol will depend on the family but i would expect some wine at least. Dirve 200 miles afterward....no way, book a room.
I am very sorry for your loss, I will pray for them.

| Thank you so much for your prayers...a wonderful lady...I believe God truly has received an angel.
You have answered my questions so wonderfully...I now feel at ease as I prepare to pack for my journey...and your tip about communion...thank you so much, I had not even thought about that part of the service...and did not even know the proper etiquette for it...ty again and God Bless You as well.

| My mom's side is catholic and my dad's is christian/baptist. I have been to both styles of funerals.
I found the catholic funerals VERY long, boring, repetitive, and involes a lot of kneeling and standing, repeating after the priest, and sad, deep prayers.
Like bountyman said, get your kneeling pads....I found it very miserable.
Ever seen a short and happy funeral?
I think the dentist is more fun than a catholic funeral. JMO!
Sorry, I hope that your experience is not as bad as mine were.
I am also terribly sorry to hear about your loved one. I think that your friend "GRADUATED" to the next level...That is my perspective.

| Catholic Funeral is actually a Funeral Mass. 90% of it just like a regular service except the readings have to do with eternal life. The Priest will give his homily on the person's life and about meeting God usually. There is a blessing at the very beginning at the back of church of the person in the casket. Then a possession up to the Alter area. From here just like a normal Mass really. Then out and to the grave side service. The whole thing at the church will take about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes.
I am a life time Catholic and had 12 years of Catholic school and all of my relatives are Catholic.
Sorry about your loss and may God Bless your Friend.

| I'm gonna close this thread but before I go...
The Funeral Mass was beautiful..there were 200-250 attendees...
The incense was burned and it wafted up to the skylight on a bright sunny day...
I learned that Shirley was Parishner Of the Year last year...what an honor...She is and will be missed dearly...
Thank you for your prayers
Thank you all...gemini

| Oh wow a catholic funeral. I'm roman catholic. When my grandmother died, we had a big shinn dig. I remember my cousins being drunk before the wake and the funeral. We celebrated morning noon and night because we knew she wanted us to go on and be happy. It is a family oriented type thing. It is all about family. Sometimes we need to cope, even though turning to alcohol will never solve problems but it does relax us in the time being especially in the loss of a love one. We usually do one nighters. We play cards after, go gambling, play poker, drink all night, bet on horses, oh yea, and then we all mourn in our own way and pick up the pieces from that. It is one big big big funeral with hundreds of people.
