| What would be correct etiquette for being away for a long time (nearly a month) and not having any way to contact someone and let them know you are ok and that you are still thinking of them? Once you have returned, I mean? Purely in an online sense at present.
A letter of apology is all I could come up with.

| Well, if the circumstances were unavoidable and unforseen, an apology for not being able to address the expected concerns is in order. It may not be your fault that you could not contact them sooner, but you should express empathy for how you'd expect them to feel.
Beyond that, an explanation of the circumstances that can be independentaly verified is in order. Sudden losses of contact raise real trust issues.
After that point, it's out of your hands.
I do find it odd, that in that whole month, you could not get a message to your correspondent.

| It's not so odd when the circumstances are explained, which I apologise I didnt do in the above post. I was, due to circumstances well beyond my control, deported and incarcerated. There was no internet access at any point in my little foray into Hell. However, it has since been sorted out. I hope.

| Gee, I bet I know who you are talking about! Ah, just say what's been going on. I know the situation you are in, so I really expected some issues along the way. Feel better now? EMAIL ME!

| I would start like this...
Sorry I've been out of pocket lately, this ______ came up and...
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXX
...I hope you understand and don't hate me for leaving so abruptly! Write back soon and I'll fill you in on the details.
Of course, you should use your own words to explain the circumstances and paraphrase what I wrote here but, maybe this is a good jumping off point for you. If not, I wasted some electrons and you might have a better idea of what you don't want to do.
Best wishes,

I'd be ready to present documentation that would prove this or be prepared to show body cavity search scars, jeez dude sounds like you've been foraying into Hades for a bit.
