| Read years ago in BEFORE THE MAYFLOWER : A HISTORY OF BLACK AMERICA by Lerone Bennett,Jr that about 20 % of White Americans have Black ancestry and I saw today on wikipedia that the rate of admixture ranges from 2 - 20 % of African and/or American Indian ancestry for approximately 1/3 of White Americans.

| It goes to show that "race" as it is generally understood in America is mostly a social construct. We are all mixed because we all have a mother and a father.
In Brazil white has a different meaning from that in the USA. Of course wikipedia can be wrong but I first came across this fact reading BEFORE THE MAYFLOWER. That book really helped me to see America and my life in it as such in a clearer manner.

I'm glad you didn't say "Cherokee"... And, before everyone gets in a bind here, let me ask if I'm the only one who wonders, if there are so many people in this country claiming Cherokee heritage, how the hell did the white man ever conquer them, and why aren't they running this country by sheer numbers alone?
Not trying to be flippant, nor disrespectful, just curious about how many folks decided that having Cherokee blood would be cool. Seems to have been a rush on the commodity that started right about the time Cher became famous.
Please enlighten me with your thoughts on this question.

| tedric: From what I know, the Cherokee Nation is the largest one in the country. Crowdog could probably tell you more about this. The way I understand it is...the Cherokee are wide spread over the country and that would probably make a Cherokee/something mix more probable? In the early days of our history the Cherokee Nation was wide spread in the Southern States. They came to the aid of the Confederates during the Civil War.
Another thing I've noticed about this same thing is the a whole lot of people I've encountered who were form Missouri...."just happened" to be related to Jesse James? I wonder why that is??

| Are you from the Northern or Southern Arapaho tribes.
Sol Kerzner from London Casinos International developed and managed the Mohegan Sun Casino in Conneticut. This was a joint venture with the Mohegan tribe, who spent time on a North American ritual to bless the ground. The Mohegans were given shares in Sol Kerzners casino.

I'm also amazed at the numbers of Jesse James 'relatives' living here in the Greatland ~ at least their last names are James...

| i think the admixture is higher than 1/3. people in america have been mixing since the 1500's right? for some reason most people think of "mixed" as being two parents of different races, but if u go back to great great great great grandparents and further; i think most people will be mixed.

| Without doing any research I would guess that all of the original Native American ancestors were outgunned by the Whites.
I'm mixed from way back when. My Dad was big into our family's geneaology. He found out there was some afro-american blood in us. But he refused to document that bit of knowledge.
Mixed race marriages seem to be on the rise amongst my neices and nephews, as well. They've made some beautiful babies too!
