I got called for jury duty today.::brick wall:: Got excused also. The case was against a male teacher/aide, 4 counts of 1st degree sexual assault on a female child under 13. The defendant was pleading not guilty( and according to our wonderful system he is until proven otherwise) I started to shake and be sick when the judge was informing us of the case, along time ago something happened and I had put it out of my mind......until today. Was I wrong in asking to be dismissed, would you have been able to keep a open mind until all the facts were presented? I'm not sure I could have gone through with it. Just looking for someone to say I did the right thing I guess. I couldn't even talk to my family or close friends about this, so thanks to the wonderful world of cyber friends I come to you for your opinions.
HOW SAD IS THAT!!

remember innocent until proven guilty. It could have been he put himself in a compromising situation and nothing really happened. but I couldn't serve just because of the past. I personally hope he didn't do it but if he did

I would do my civic duty and serve on the jury
I could be impartial, and listen, then juddge on the evidence given...

Well if you know that you would have a hard time being partial then well the best thing to do is ask to be excused!!!

Whitchie, You certainly did do the right thing. I was jury forman on a jury here in Michigan a few months ago. Part of the screening process for selection of jurors was after having provided the details in the make up of the case at hand. each candidate was asked if there was something relevant in their past that would make it difficult for them to remain impartial thus preventing an open mind.
Obvioulsy what you have been holding inside made it impossible for you to remain impartial. You did the right thing for yourself

I got picked for Jury Duty once and we found the guy guilty and he was facing a prison term, kind of scared me when I came face to face with his very mean redneck family in the parking lot, I took off out of there like my shoes where on fire.

I don't know if I could handle hearing the details of abuse towards children or animals especially when it comes to sexual abuse. I do no that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Isn't it in other countries that it is the opposite??? Guilty until proven innocent. Wouldn't that be harder to prove???

Witchie..you did what you had to do...and i'm sorry this stirred up old bad memories..
That's why they have so many come in because some just can't be impartial. And that's ok.
