My older sister has started feeling depressed lately. My mother mentioned it, and I noticed that my sister was a little less enthusiastic about things. On Saturday, I was supposed to babysit my nieces while my sister and her husband went out, but when I got there, I found that my sister was sick (she looked awful... pale, puffy eyes, still in her pajamas) and I ended up going home. I found out today that she wasn't sick, she was just in a bad depression, and this apparently happens pretty often. She gets depressed to the point where she can't make herself do anything, she just goes to bed in the middle of the afternoon.
I've been dealing with my own seasonal affective disorder since I was around twelve or so, and I feel like I should be able to do something for her, but short of being there for her, I just don't know what. She won't go see a doctor, and I'm worried about her and about how it may effect her family. I've been making sure that I call her and make plans with her, or use my days off to babysit the girls so she and her hubby can do something together, but it doesn't seem to be helping, and I don't know what else I can do. Anyone have suggestions about how to help a loved one who's depressed?

Continue to be there for her. Don't try prying too much. I will suggest trying more time with her away from home. She may open up as you share some of your own struggles, even the worst ones to see if she can relate. So many things can bring on depression today and it isn't easy to gain enterance to someones mind. Be patient and continue showing your love.

I struggle on a daily basis, not only with depression but bi-polar. I joke and say it's just hard to be me. However, it is in noway a joke. You have a right to be concernd..Encourage medical treatment she may have trouble with something other than depression. Julia

depression can become debilitating. It is a chemical imbalance,
it is treatable with medication.
Since the Suicide of my son in 2005, I have been on
medication for advanced depression.
She really needs to see a doctor and get started
on a treatment.
Hope she and you get some help with this.
