| There sure are many people in the USA that can't live off the wages of a "free market". At least the Cuban government provides housing,education and health care and this based on its OWN RESOURCES!
Life is hard in some aspects in Cuba but relative to many others it looks pretty darn goo d.

| Yes, I definately agree with you. Fidel Castro recently dedicated a third of Cuban land to marine projects.
The quality of water in Cuba is very good and the people look healthy to me.

A cubano expatriate in Venezuela told me one way that works: He used to visit his grandparents in La Habana where the two of them had their home. But last time he went, there were 16 strangers living there.

| A lot of people in America don't have a home or barely something to live in yet we live in a continental sized nation with abundant resources whereas Cuba does not.They have achieved a lot with very little.

Don't they have 3 or 4 families living in 3 bedrooms apts or 5 families living in a house?! What's the difference?!

SCW: In a recent ranking of industrialized nation's medical/healthcare systems, Cuba was ranked 28th while the U.S. was ranked...............30th.
America is NOT ranked 1st or even 5th on many variables.(yes, jcsx, we're indeed ranked 6th on something)

| The reason that Cuba is as poor as it is, is America won't let them play in their Reindeer game. and not only that, we wont play with people that play with Cuba.
I find it amuzing that people can't figure out that the people that fled Cuba to America after their revolution were the same people that were prospering from the old system.
And that system was Batista Americas Fascist of choice. America notoriously backs the Dark Horse, Batista , Pol Pot, Noriega, Ciucesku, Stalin, Hussein, the Sha, I'm sure you all can add a few.
I wonder why we have lost our place of popularity in the world?

| To curious...Cubans are still landing on Florida beaches weekly. I doubt they had much to do with a regime that existed over 50 years ago.How many Americans are risking thier lives to cross 90 miles of ocean to live in Cuba? And as to not doing business with countries who do business with Cuba...what about Canada??? or the rest of the world. America is just about the sole participant in the Cuban embargo. So why is Cuba so poor?? Socialism always crumbles under it's own weight.

(what I was told about crowded housing in La Habana). I didn't doubt it, based on many other reports I was reading and hearing from Latin America. One writer I like, in English, is Álvaro Vargas-Llosa. Anyway, I'm of the party who believes el comunismo has wrecked Cuba as it wrecked Eastern Europe. However, the US carries a lot of blame for Cuba's condition, because the US is so damned big and has been so clumsy and arrogant about it.

The difference, I would say, is that local occupancy laws prohibit this. But if it's the case, as you indicate, then the fat will hit the fan about code enforcement. This would be a good story for La Voz de Kentucky here in Lexington.

| Communism did not wreck Eastern Europe.They were actually free of war for a change.Racism/nationalism & big landowners wrecked eastern Europe.
Capitalism sure has wrecked Africa such as the Belgian congo not to mention the short life spans and high death rates under Western imperialism.
The West would be less than it is without the rest of the world to exploit.

| soul look up the history about russian troops invading the communist block countries to stop up risings, and if it was so great why are all the former russian blocked countries like Poland for example all clamoring to get into Nato so they can't be taken over again if the change in russia goes south and they resort to their former evil selves.

| Sorry soul,but capitalism didn't wreck Africa. I believe it was more due to corrupt leaders,tribal and religious wars,and lack of education.And I have to agree with Jay..eastern europe was under constant threat if not direct intervention by Soviet or eastern block troops.

| Eastern Europe was better off under USSR.Right-wing nationalism & racism was not allowed to be overtly obvious.Remenber,Western Europe recieved Marshall Plan aid whereas Eastern Europe and USSR had to pull theirselves up by the bootstrap.Much of the wealth in Western Europe came from plundered 3rd world nations.USSR lost the equivalent of everything east of the Mississippi River in WW2 whereas USA did not.
