What must the new administration and the next Congress do to fix the financial mess we are in?

There will be a new executive team in Washington on 1.20.09 - Democrat or Republican.

The House and Senate will change with an increase or a decrease in party representation.

What must happen to bring fiscal sanity to "our house?"

Peace, Pam

Eddie: I have always liked him. I was wishing he would run for president. Many of those like him are gone and the ones left will not speak out.
This congress is spending money like there is no tomorrow. If it doesn’t end or if we don’t get control of it will bankrupt the country. I don’t trust the government any longer. Everything they touch they screw up and the fix is to always throw more money at it. That never works. These bloated spending bills are sickening. The longer they stay the more powerful they become and the more PORK they steal from us for their own. Very few work for us anymore. I doubt the next house will be any different.
Stop the unnecessary spending.
Balance the damn check book.
Stop adding entitlement programs.
Shut the border down. We cannot afford the illegals any longer.
Stop tying our military’s hands and let them finish the job over there once and for all.
Open up for some domestic drilling, build some more coal burning electric plants, build a few more nuclear power plants, build some additional oil refineries and stop sending OUR money to the middle east terrorist supporting countries that want to kill us.

I think one of the things that might really help is to completely do away with lobbyist, outlaw them.

Then, when some issue is coming up the top people in that field who have all differing ideas and maybe 5 lay people should be invited to be a discussion group for a set amount of time and asked to have 10-15 ideas to present ranked by support of that group. The ideas should show both the pros and cons of it.

This group is then disbanded. This way no-one gets an in with anyone in office, they will be thinking about the topic at hand, and a wider range of ideas would be offered for consideration. I also feel by doing it this way, with no one getting paid to push an agenda, the group would more likely be able to have an actual discourse about the topic and would take the time to listen, and incorporate another's viewpoint, than in other settings.

Our elected officials would have to read the synopsis of what the group came up with without any knowledge of who presented or backs the possible solutions given. That way they could use some clarity of mind rather than special interest to decide what would be the best course of action.

I think this in itsself would stop a huge amount of pork barrel spending.

The last time the president did this the Democrats hammered the hell out of him and Chaney for not disclosing who the industry experts were. You will have a tough time getting the big boys and girls to participate after that fiasco. The last thing they need it to be hammered by the press. Most have corporations to run.
The lobbyists are a big problem but only to a corrupt or stupid politicians. We also need a law that will not allow our former politicians to become one for a period of time after leaving office.

Pork has actually decreased but still is way too large a part of government spending.

I think lobbyists are such a part of the political establishment that eliminating them will be nearly impossible. They are like mosquitos. Blood-suckers nearly all!

I also think corporate America has lost its way. Greed is the only motivation. The dollar drives all decisions. There's little concern about being good corporate citizens.

Real leadership will require someone to always be on guard about them. They will not act in the interests of the majority of Americans. They will almost always act in the interests of their shareholders.

We are so in need of real leadership in this country. Leaders who listen, who are willing to learn, who are willing to admit not knowing everything, who are willing to admit a mistake, who do not see changing their minds as a sign of weakness.

Leaders who are willing to tell us the truth - even when they know we don't want the truth or will not like it.

Some of us need to grow up: all of our leaders are not good, perfect, all-knowing, well-meaning, or benevolent. Its like growing up and realizing your parents were: wrong, stupid, ill-informed, mean, nasty, well-meaning but clueless, etc......

It has to happen if we are to be the current generation in positions of authority, and raising the next generation to follow us.

Its time for us to be the grownups, and with that comes responsibility. Its time we ask our leaders to be leaders and hold them accountable.

I am ever the optimist, albeit a practical optimist!

Peace, Pam

Of course! But when someone has already said something that's worth paying attention to, then why reinvent the wheel?

She's right and the GOP (Grand Oil Party) or Republicans are responsible for it. Most of the $9 trillion. Reagan did his part bankrupting the Soviet Union in an arms race. Quadrupled the deficit. Dubya's tacked on 3 billion more by fighting the wrong war instead of blowing Afghanistan, Somalia and Saudi Arabia off the map like he should have done on Sept 12. BIN lADEN WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THERE SOMEWHERE. Now John S McAngermanagement will add another 3-4 billion by 2012 pushing the war further and possibly adding some extra curricular like Iran, etc. Why did we build all these WMD's originally and not use them when the need arose. Not the Dr. Strangelove scenario but a informed, intelligent, measured response to ANY nation that gives us grief.
You Republicans go on about wild reckless deficit liberal Democrat spending but your Presidents did most of it. We could have taken the Reagan & Bush 43 deficits and doubled Social Security spending, had universal healthcare, took out binLaden and still had enough left over to still have the world's top military machine (which we should have!). Strange wasnt it that corporate America was in love with Bill Clinton, a Democrat, but who guided us thru 8 great years of growth and prosperity. But we have mortgaged our kids future regardless and were increasing it about $12 000 a second. McCain will basically turn it into foreclosure!
The problem isnt our spending-its what were spending it on.

I can assure you he is not a fake or a poser. He is one of many who hate what W and his gang have done to this country.

We love our country, too, and we are scared for our future - after what this administration has done to us economically, diplomatically and militarily.

1.20.09 cannot come soon enough for many of us...we, who are also patriots in this, our, country who hate this president's policies and his imperial actions!
